Combined PI and VLF detector

  • on: January 09, 2016, 09:49 AM
Watch this space  ...

I am in the process of testing a concept I have been thinking about for a while,  having the ability to be able to switch between PI and VLF. I have repaired my 8 inch GSH 2 coil and am about to test it with my new concept in mind. Will post pics and results later this week end.

Any pointers to problems that I can anticipate so that I can test and make changes early in the process ? Tks

As long as both VLF and PI circuits are not running concurrently.  Both together will give you serious interaction/interference but if you have both on one coil with only one ON at a time there should'nt be problems.  I do not know if the coil inductance can be configured to give optimal performance on each system though..  Let us know what you discover......

Project running a bit behind schedule ...... hope to have some results and pics by this evening.  The wind has been blowing gales down this end of the world so have not been able to do any field/beach trials.

Concept still looking good.

I own a Ace 350 which I later supplemented with a Sea Hunter mk2, both very nice and usable machines.
I started with the Ace 350 but found it's behaviour very erratic in wet beach sand and shallow sea water, continuously having to readjust the the sensitivity and discrimination. Next came the Sea Hunter which is ideal for beach and surf detecting.
Often I go down to the beach with my Sea Hunter only to find the surf and tide conditions not really suitable for water or wet sand detecting and wish I had rather brought my Ace 350 with me so I could hunt the dry sand higher up. This is when the idea of combining the properties of the Sea Hunter and the Ace was hatched ..... the birth of the "Sea Ace" concept!

One shaft with quick change control unit heads and coils (the swap-out units carried in a rucksac) !

My working prototype uses the Ace 350 shaft and display unit with the Sea Hunter control unit  taped to wrist cuff or hip/chest mounted with relevant harness, the coils and headphones swapped round as needed.

A Nel Tornado Ace coil and the manual ground balancing mod for the Ace 350 is going to make this a killer combo.

The final model can have a customized carbon-fiber shaft with quick release attachments for either the Sea Hunter or Ace (possibly both) control units plus ease of changing coils as needed. Elastic/Velcro straps for securing the coil cable.

Nice. So you will take the ace control box off when you do water hunting

Yip .... mix and match to meet the situation/requirements.

Possibly make the 350 display splashproof/waterptoof to 2 meters.
Wet sand up to knee deep water with small breaking waves .... splash proof will be sufficient ( just don't drop the unit or fall)

Final system with customized carbon-fibre shaft can have the ability for quick release/change for either unit.

Just a possible system for guys that have Garrett Ace or  AT Pro units and Sea Hunters or other lose mounting PI units. Saves having to carry two full units around. ( Actually ending with two possible units, either sharing a common shaft  the other unit carried in a backpac)

Progress report.............

Not so sure if this is progress but at least I am going to end up with a waterproof "Straight Ace" !

I saw those boxes for sale. They were just a little too expensive for my liking. I would be interested to see how it works out for you

Ok - I thought you were developing a new concept where with a flick of a button you could change between a VLF or PI all on one shaft with one coil.  This is something different - more of a using one shaft and re-configuring it as you need.  Nice waterproof plastic box for that 350!

Sorry guys re my last post ... I see you guys missed the wink ?

Barney you correct that basically I want one shaft then just swap coils and control heads  (carry the alternative unit in a backpac )
