Gremlin's junk

  • on: March 21, 2013, 04:44 PM
Well at least some junk is interesting.

The last two day's inventory and also my first metal detecting ever.

These are the top on the list of being interesting.
An 80's pull tab, a coke cap I think that reads 1Liter/1Litre and the winner is a lead tube of mc Leans. LOL!!

Haha it's amazing that if u had to just walk past the stuff it seems like junk but when u dig it up, it's all so more meaningful :)

Been really busy this weekend.

Wen't to the vaal and scanned areas rarely visited. Found bits of illuminum.
Finally got to my planned destination an old hous that was wrecked in the middle of nowhere, Dug something that was to deep to retrieve and the sun was about to set so I left it for another day.

Wen't to an old hillside here in Roodepoort today that used to be open to public but got secluded due to surrounding development. Just found a ton of old pulltabs.

This afternoon I wen't to a local park/pond and ended up digging really deep again in hard dirt. It was compacted and there was stones and rocks on the way down. Found it hard to believe that there's something down there. After about a foot deep I got to yellow painted plate, at first it looked like it could be part of a sighn or something but then I saw a reinforcement brace, looks like an old truck hatch or pannel or some car bodywork but my hole was to small to get it out so I closed it up again for another day.

Some stuff I found.

The two top left objects was from the back yard, started cleaning up a corner and started hitting some deep stuff. The one object seems to be an old style lead roof screw seal washer. They don't make them like that anymore. The other seems to be a piece of an old stand tag I think. When propery development sell off properties in large numbers the tag would be the only thing on the vacant lot stuck to a dropper rod.

The right top object was from an old park that turned out to be an old graveyard. It seems to be a loop, stud for an old army style tent or "ballsak" or something, it's copper and has black paint on it.

Some coins I found in an old wrecked play park, the spinning wheel was removed so I got a few coins in the dirt that used to be below the spinning plate. I got bugged by to many people for illustrations so I left. The other coins was also from the yard and lo  and behold I picked up the 2 cent in my garage.

Florida lake. Nothing major yet. Found some old 2cents and what appears to be a Botswanna pula, it looks horrible but has a marabu bird on the front with the words 5 Pembe.

Sticked to one spot and tried to clean it up fairly well, ended up collecting a mountain of bottle caps but it was cleaner than some other areas I have tried.

No and the big sighn indicating that the park is under the fishing clubs "Behavioural monitoring" put me at ease since I did run it pas the club management and they didn't see any problem with it.

At Darrenjay I believe that metal detecting is such a novelty in SA with a VERY VERY small number of active detectorists (maybe I am wrong but the forum and facebook group together have about 50 members of which lets say 30 are active) so the chance of being hassled is almost nil. My experience has been that more people are interested about what we doing and in all my detecting I have only met friendly people. I do ask for permission on private land and suggest that you join the local historical society and flash your membership card - this also works :-) or get a T shirt saying something about Landmine removal then folks will leave you alone lol.

LOL!!

You never know.

Anyway... I at least beat the pula coin find today. Found this one cent from 1967 in the garden. Hehe..
So for now this is my personal best. I just washed it with acetone and then gave it a drop of cooking oil, in case someone is looking for one one day.

Today's hunt was on an old plot. It still has stone walling and palm trees typical of pre 70's built structures.

TONS of iron junk!!
Found in insteresting key hole cover but I damaged it with the shovel, a 38 special bullet shell some more lead washers, a bell from a cymball(Music instrument, not sure), some lead paint tubes and toothpaste, and a 1992 R1 Coin.

The driveway also had some lumps of nickel in the gravel, bizzarre perhaps some gravel had nickel waste in it at some time.

I forgot to scan arround the on site pay phone. Dope!!

So far I had a good stride getting permission for places. Just phone, you get directed and directed but eventually you find the right people. E-mail is useless in most cases.

Sounds like a plan.
...

Most productive hour in the back yard yet(My wife wished me luck today):

a F(Fine)'ish 2Cent coin. It's older than I am and it looks pretty good. Cleaned it with a toothbrush lightly but I think I need a softer brush.

Don't know what gun this bullet is from? Rather smallish. Anyone???

A disney badge of some sort. Or half of it. After inspecting it for a while, It seems like a Pocahontas badge.

Playing with the Nokta, it seems to respond mostly only unidirectional to small magnetite/laterite(Can't x them out) the dirt in the yard is full of them they are all magnetic, I can adjust them out, however sometimes some seems to still pick up or create stronger signals than the rest with some fine tuning.
I cleaned this lump an lo and behold, seems there was two floods on this bed of clay that made some substance settle, 2 tiny veins of gold dust, or at least it looks like it is.
Mica dust wouldn't have created a response boost I think.
This is a macro shot so these veins are hard to see without strong magnification.
The whole of roodepoort(red port) is nothing more than a red clay deposit. So this stuff is everywhere. The magnetite reach deep shades of purple at some places. Might be that we had a long history of major periodic floods for some time.
