Yup, you definitely got to put some time in. My resistors all seemed right though

I verified and fitted all the resistors.  All is well there.  Also, I reoriented the diode too.

remove all the IC's except 7660
power up the board and check the voltages at U5  (78L05)  you should have your input voltage (12V) on one side and 5V on the output side
next check U6 (7660) pin 5 is the negative voltage supply and should give you -5V (minus 5V)

U5 was as you said, 12v & 5v
U6 however, was a different story.  Pin 5 was 0.43v So does that mean that U6 is fried? 

Do I test the rest of them or change out U6 first?

this might sound like a silly question but it has happened many times
Is U6 in the right way around? If so then it is most probably fried. it is the most sensitive of all the IC's on the board
if getting spares is not a big hassle then just replace the 7660 first

u7 pin 14 v 4.97 +
u7 pin 7 v 4.75 -

Luuk, Yes the ICs are oriented correctly, but it's a good question.  It's always a smart idea to look through the simplest and easiest solutions first when troubleshooting.

I watched that vid.  The info starts at 39:49 and is about 10 minutes long.  It was interesting, but not really solving the issues.  I have ordered a new 7660 chip.  I figure it'll be here in a week.  I hope that is the only fried part.

One other idea that is mentioned in the video; put a fuse that is 12v 400ma on it.

geez....is the video that long.
the reason for the fuse is just in case of reversed polarity. then at least only the fuse goes and not the circuit board
where do you live that it takes so long to get a spare part?

In the US.  Ordering it on eBay typically means that it's coming from the other side of the planet.  There aren't too many 'electronic component' stores any more.  It's a dying hobby now because people are becoming more and more stupid.

 That was a funny last sentence!!....Im amazed that you can ship one 7660. I blew through about 4 of each chip they cost around 1 dollar each is SA....I would have ordered at least 2 of every chip if you gonna wait a week

Hi guys and girls. Luuk has kindly offered to have a look at my board and sort out any problems that I might have. After a prelimanary look at the board he says that there is a problem with my audio, and that the coax cable I am using just doesn't work.

got everything set up correctly now. hooked up my 4" coil and its working very nicely.
the 10" coil for this PI is teflon taped, spiral wrapped and ready to be shielded and if all goes well
it should give pretty good results
