[Demian (Z-X-T)]

We decided to detect the main beach @ St. Lucia - Kwazulu/Natal... It was the usual suspects, but, with a 'glory hole' of sinkers and a beautiful antique bone handled knife.

The most amazing part was the distance from the beach that the sinkers were found. What's also incredible was the difference in sinkers, some were very, very old and yet, others were relatively new... Really strange to say the least. What is also worth mentioning was the depth at which the sinkers were found... I have absolutely no explanation for this!!!





The excavation team hard at work!!! You can see that it's a debris field of sorts, very rocky and not sandy at all 



This photo give one an idea of just how far away from the sea the sinkers were found, incredible. I have no idea what is going on here.



Not the most shallow hole I've ever hunted  Full of stones and pebbles, all very tightly packed together. This might have been part of the St. Lucia estuary years ago, or something like that, but, I have no information regarding the extent of the estuary, nor old maps to reference.

Here's all the sinkers Most of them are heavily rusted with all their metal loops gone 



These sinkers are old, in all my years of fishing I have never seen one's like this

...what I presume to be a very, very old 2c piece 



A 'spoon'... It's resting in a vinegar and lemon juice 'bath'... It should clean up nicely 



A pull-tab worth finding and keeping 



...what appears to be a old railway securing spike



...and then some of the usual suspects 





...a solid ball of something that made the MD 'scream' and some bits of rusted chunks of metal

...the small bone handled knife is just as impressive  I can see what appears to be a stamp of sorts and the word 'Firth Stainless', which I'll research

...the handle is 'spot-on', the base of the blade shape is almost identical, however, the manufacturers stamp is not the same

What is interesting is the knife has gradually been filed down, which means that this knife was seriously used and over a very, very long time... Considering that there has been activity at St. Lucia since the early 1800's one can only surmise what this knife was used for.. https://stluciasa.com/about-st-lucia/history-st-lucia/
