Well boys and girls, after the medal on Thursday it was early at Selborne with heaps of anticipation. The hunt started off very slow in a area we recovered 54 coins in total quite some time ago in a previous group hunt. This time I was joined by Tom, Cindy and Brendan. As the morning dragged on, the sun came down on us boiling my brains in my skull to human soup.

All of a sudden it was coins, coins and more coins everywhere....... I could not believe the rate at which they popped out, and this in a area we have worked over before. Strangest thing though was the amount of Tickeys (3d) that came out and the unusual signals it was giving on my Xterra 305. Normally I find them on a constant 32 or 32/36 mix. This time it varied as low as 16/20 which is way down in the pull tab range with some of them giving a tripple reading of 24/28/32. This was quite odd but did explain why we miss those little suckers. They are masters of disguise.

Up to Saturday morning by record for pre-1965 coins in one hunt stood at 18 with the group total for the day at 54. After an extrodenary 10 hour hunt day my count came in at 20 coins and the total number for the hunt at 56. Bam, what more could be asked for....

This morning I went back to the same spot where we hit the motherload yesterday in search of Tom's Tickey that he lost and decided to once again re-work the area not expecting to find to much more than one or two left behinds. Boy was I in for yet another supprise. I was joined today by Eric and spend a total of 8 hours in the area.

At the end of the day I recovered 17 coins, a small pocket knife (which I forgot to take a pic of), and a pendant of the Gongregation of the Childrent of Mary dating back to the late 1800's. Waht an awesome discovery....

Congregation of the Children of Mary Medal
This beautiful 19th century medal would have been worn by a member of the group "The Congregation of the Children of Mary".

The front of the medal shows the Blessed Virgin Mary in the same pose that she has on the Miraculous Medal:  standing on a snake with a halo of stars around her head.  (I've added a picture of a Miraculous Medal right below the Children of Mary medal)  The Miraculous Medal was struck at the request of the Virgin Mary during a series of visions that were experienced by St Catherine Laboure beginning in 1830.  In 1835 St Catherine told her confessor of a request the Blessed Mother had made to her during on of these visions:
"It is the Blessed Virgin's wish that you should found a Confraternity of the Children of MARY. She will give them many graces. The month of May will be kept with great splendour and MARY will bestow abundant blessings upon them."

And so the seed was planted for the beginning of The Congregation of the Children of Mary.  The group was first opened to girls who were students or orphans in the care of the The Sisters of Charity (St Catherine Laboure's religious order), and later welcomed girls not associated with the order as well.  Girls and young women in the society were encouraged to live holy and devout lives in the everyday world by embracing the virtues of sacrifice, prayer, and works of charity.

But....you couldn't just show up and say "Hey! I'm ready to be a child of Mary!"  A girl had to
request to join, then wait six months during which time she practiced the virtues of the group and prepared to live its values.  When a girl finally entered the group, she was given a beautiful medal, like the one above, which she could wear on a blue ribbon.  I've even heard that they sometimes wore little blue capes as well!

The wording around the edge of the medal reads "Monstra Te Esse Matrem" which is Latin for "Show thyself  a mother".  These words come from a line in the ancient Marian hymn "Ave Stella Maris" or "Hail Star of The Sea".

When you flip the medal over, you see an emblem featuring two stems of lilies curving around a radiant star.  I think that the star must also represent Mary as "The Star of the Sea", and the lily symbolizes purity, which was an important virtue for Children of Mary.

The wording around the edge is in French and translates as "Congregation of the Children of Mary", but the group was also known as the "Sodality of the Children of Mary".  At the bottom is a small area that could be used to engrave the child's name or the date of her entry into the society.

Lol Peter......It will have to be an wide angle shot. To date I have recovered 333 pre 1965 coins (Excluding some that I forgot to post and catalogue, still lying around the house) and about 15 medals from Selborne. If everything goes well I should hopefully reach the 400 mark by the end of the year. ;) :P ;)

Lol Tony, The elusive 5 Shilling will come. At this stage I am still not digging High end 44 signals which might be it. First wanna get the rest of the goodies out, then concentrate on the next run over on the 44's ;)
