damaged Sea Hunter MK2 coil

  • on: January 07, 2016, 02:29 PM
I have damaged my Sea Hunter Mk 2's 8 inch mono coil ....... resin encapsulation cracked and delamination of molded housing/cover ! (dropped a few times and also been stood on)

Quite some battle to find specs on this so called "mono" coil that actually consists of two concentric coils ! It appears that the inductance and resistance of each coil should be in the region of 110uH and 1.5 ohms respectively.

Now to test mine to see if there has been any salt water ingress ion and damage to the windings.

If all Ok  I will have to find a way of reinforcing  the coil encapsulation across the cracked section and then waterproofing again.  Any suggestions.

(will post pic tonight)

I have heard that the stuff called plastidip is quite good. People use it quite often to waterproof pinpointers. I am not too sure what it would do to the friction against sand. The rubber might cause more friction when swinging, therefor making it more difficult.

Marine silicon maybe? I am not too sure if that will affect the coils performance though

Here the pics ..........
Paul once sealed I will have to cross-brase  it to stop any flexing across the crack.

(Dam, also gave my phone a dunking yesterday morning !)

Ouch....that looks bad. You can see sand in the crack already. Maybe fibreglass??

Or good old Pratley's Putty?

Oh, looking at the crack one has to have a sealant that is very viscous to penetrate the crack and set hard, Prately's two component glue is very viscous for the first two minutes and will seal and set this, after that a further coating of Prately's to cover the crack will help.  This two component glue will bond well to the base, just roughen it up with a 600 grit paper to give it a surface to adhere too. The hardened effect of the glue will be a good start, after that I would coat the ring with chop strand for added strength and make it at least 2-3 mm thick. One problem is fibre glass is heavy and adds weight.
One can also use Kevlar cloth in that area only it if light and tougher. food for thought. Plastic dipping compond is soft and tears off, I have tried this on many tools. I do not recommend it.

Yep that crack has been there for awhile ..... check alignment of scuff marks and also the paint splatter, happened before I gave it the high viz paint job ! (just shows one should check gear regularly after use )

Coil repaired and ready to be tested !

Tony tks for guidance re polyester resin, I will experiment with the process and put to future use when DIY coils are ready for potting.

ps...........
I have decide to take the plunge and order the Garret Carrot and also a 14 inch coil for the Sea Hunter.
