We exhibited at the South African Gold panning championships a month or so ago and had the opportunity to give it a try but never got around to it. I must say it was rather interesting to watch the contestants and the different techniques they applied to get the booty. I should have some Turbopans in stock soon if you are interested.

I might want to give it a shot some day. Let me know when you will be going out again and maybe we can arrange something.

Hi all,

Is there any spots that one can go and try without being in any trouble, do you require a permit? I would really like to park at a creek/bed and just do the some prospecting,  any ideas or tips?  ;)

Find someone who has a river on their property, its the best bet. Recreational panning isnt really allowed here. What area are you based

You can pan under a licence owner's permit but this is not something they would do readily I don't know.

Pilgrems rest has created a tourist attraction with an arrangement like this. You can pan under their licence and you are allowed to keep what you find, well... whatever you can get at the venue.

Fishless, there are a number of places in the western cape where gold has been found according to my geology books.
One of them is right above your head......Lions head has a gold bearing quartz seam cutting across it.
the Breede river streams in the Worcester area contain gold. plenty of gold was found in the rivers around Knysna.
the first goldfields in SA was in fact in the karoo near Prince Albert
Thar's gould in em hills boy......

Thanks for the feedback, I stay and work in Randburg,GP

Would really like to go a and try this, a guy from CT told me one can jump out of your car next to the road and do some panning, if it is not private ground.  But i will like to do this in a gold bearing creek/river etc - but in a legal way. IF all else fails I guess I will have to buy some paydirt from Randy in the USA - but it wont be the same. I think nothing will beat sitting in creek with your sluice or pan and do some old school prospecting.

What about blaauwbank in Magaliesburg? I have noticed there are a few bridges going over the river, cant one pop in there and grap some sand? Or will it fall under the "illegal" phrase?

Fishless, like a wise man told me some time ago - Gold is where it is not.

Best is to get out there and check, im sure SA has a few untap sources of gold.
