.

Any idea why and how the US buttons ended up in the Cullinan/Kameelfontein area? This button, like the others I found can be dated back to 1902.

Hi Demian,

Yes it is hallmarked and all.
This is what it probably looked like.
Many happy hunts.

Ex US military buttons are all over Gauteng, I have a collection of the things, Quite a few Americans fought with the Boers in solidarity, others were sent over to train the Boers on US military equipment and many came to join in the hunt for gold after serving in different wars......
Where is that five Shilling???

I agree Tony, there is an old site on the farm where they delved for diamonds until 1952.
Many happy hunts.

I am quite intrigued by the amount of US buttons you guys are digging up...now the sceptic in me (it comes naturally, its my job) can't understand why so many are found. They were not here on "official business" i.e. sanctioned by their government and in full US uniform. Could it be that surplus clothing ended up here (like Nato Parkas), and were used by perhaps diggers etc.?

Just a guess. Intriguing none the less.

Hi Jaco,

There is a possibility that some clothing could have ended up in civilian hands.  Take a look at the much appreciated information provided by Allen. I am currently corresponding with Michael Headly an American gentleman and the author of one of the articles. I am sure we will have some answers soon.
Many happy hunts.
