Newbie George

  • on: May 17, 2014, 05:59 PM
Hi All

I am a newbie from George. I am not actually a newbie as I had a device of unknown origin with which I did some detecting along the beaches of George and Knysna. No I am not rich yet and have a collection comprising pocket knives, forks, champagne bottles and one 18 Ct diamond cluster ring.

My device was cheap and I bought it new for R1700.00.  Seeing that it more than paid for itself, I sold it and I am now in the market for a proper device that can do water as well.  According to Government policy I am now retired but I still brush my teeth with the bathroom door open.  I need some advice on what to go for as I also want to go inland.  It must be able to detect gold bars, buried tanks from WW2, Spitfires and shirt buttons (gold of course).  I want to spent up to R6000.00 on a device that wont wear me down after 70 kilometers or 3 days scanning.  It must have good audio and visuals as you know what happens to ears and eyes and other things after 60.

Hi Treapezium. Welcome to our great and fast growing community. In the range of R 6000 for inland use you are looking on the Minelab side on the X-Terra 305 like the one I have. It has worked great for me thus far as a entry level machine and has been using it for a year now. Unfortunately, I can not tell you what it will do on the beach as I have not had the opportunity yet. Will be testing it the second week of June when I go down to Mapelane, Natal.

I have no experience on other machines such as Garrett, Fisher etc pertaining to Price range vs quality but are 100% sure that the rest of the guys around here will be able to supply the required info.

Remember to post your finds as you go.

Welcome to the forum. Detectors in the price range you are looking at will probably not handle both inland and ocean conditions the way you would like them to. PI machines are best in salt water, but generally don't have any discrimination, which is what you would like inland.

If you choose a VLF machine, make sure you have good ground balance, so that it can also be used in sea water. I have always thought that the Garrett AT Pro is a good all rounder

For R6400 you can get yourself a Fisher f5  which has some unique features like threshold and gain which makes it fine tune onto those tiny objects. Has ground balance aswell i got myself one and so far beach and ground its a blood hound.  Make sure to get the 11inch Double to to make your discrimination better and then als for overall better depth.  You cant go wrong with this unit there is also a similar unit for same price called the Teknetics gamma 6000 or slightt upgrade Omega 8000.

If you can Reach the bracket of R8800 there is a Teknetics G2 which is a Beach Machine/Relic/Gold Prospecting coming in at 19khz. People are lately ranting and raving on the Beach capabilities that this machine has. Give Wolfgang a shout He will hook you up in no time  :P Great Service Got my machine within a day of purchase
