Hi to everyone from the Free State

We are a husband and wife who have taken up "treasure hunting" as a hobby! We have had our metal detector for the last 6 years but never really used it.  We would like to actively start treasure hunting now but don't quite know where to go and what to look for.  However, we do live in a town that is +- 150 years old but don't know where to start!!

We used our metal detector on Sunday in a secluded, out of town, unpopulated area and we did find something very interesting. Up to now, no one has been able to identify what exactly it is or was as it is damaged and possibly incomplete.

We don't live anywhere near the sea so where to start..................

Smithfield shounds interesting. Old Surnames was family business or skill related. Perhaps the Smith's got busy there.

Anyway...

Upload some pictures of your finds so we can be stumped by it too.

The "where to start" part is easy; right beneath your feet is always a good place to start. If you can get permission from old churches, just ask the "kerkraad"  - awesome places with very little trash and lots of coins , Parks - normally high trash levels but coins and jewelry might pop out anywhere. Oh, and don't forget the library for doing research  and google for old pics and history to see where what happened in the past.
