Title: Newbie saying HI
Post by: Alan on December 30, 2012, 09:27 PM
Hey, firstly, let me say thanks to Chris for setting this forum up.

My name is Alan and I have been detecting from the early 1990’s.  I am from the Somerset West area in the Western Cape and fell in love with the sea and beaches when I started surfing when I was about 8.  When I was at high school I would sell ice cream on the Strand beach during school holidays and quickly worked out that the sand was full of gold if you know where to look.  After a few years hitch-hiking around Southern and Central Africa, finding volunteer work with NGO’s to survive, I came back to SA to study, with some money that an NGO I volunteered with in Mozambique gave me.  I paid my registration fees at Stellenbosch University and with the remaining money I bought a White’s Surfmaster II.  Needless to say everyone thought I had lost it.  Well, I paid for my undergraduates, honours and masters from gold I took out of the water.  Back in those early days, if I was not making R40 per hour in coins, I would go to the next beach.  If it was not for the fact that the real world catches up to all of us, I would still be beach hopping - when there was good surf, I would be in the water with my board and when the waves were flat, I would be in the water with my Surfmaster.

I still have my Surfmaster, (prefer PI over VLF) and she is still finding gold  ;)
