Former "Lady Selborne Area" / Suiderberg finds
(https://metaldetectingforums.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ftreasurehunters.co.za%2Fforums%2Fgallery%2F111-250813180304.jpeg&hash=2ec7bd579427c5c7220a1e28ab29766be43b16da)
http://treasurehunters.co.za/forums/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;id=51
After sitting pointlessly at home today I started mapping the timeline of Pretoria's suburbs on Google earth and realised the area where I assumed the Old Indian shop was in Suiderberg was actually established in 1905 as a "multi racial township" known as Lady Selborne later demolised in the lated 40's or 50's. So armed with new knowlede of the area, I went back there today and believe me I'm glad I did.
Managed to find:
A sugar spoon - Lol, 3rd spoon in the area ;D
A 1945 South Africa 6D (6 Pence)
And something that really blows my mind and need identifying:
At first I thought it was a railway or transit token but could just be some sort of Military Medal.
It has the Pretoria Coat of Arms in front with the enscription "Praestanua Praevaleat Pretoria" on the front and on the back Capital Letters "PM" on top with a number 2849. No more, no less.
Googled the wording. The closest I got was "Praestantia Praevaleat Pretoria? (meaning, "May Pretoria Be Pre-eminent In Excellence") which was on the World War I service medal. A little-known bronze medal was given by the city council to citizens of Pretoria returning from service in the First World War.
I dobt however it is and am looking for some pointers as to who can Identify this piece for sure. I will try and post a clearer picture as soon as I can.
-
Okay, this little round thing kept bugging the living daylights out of me.... :o
So after searching all different angles I finally came up with the correct answer. It is not a service medal but a "Pretoria Municipal Quarry Token". Also found a clear picture on bidorbuy.
Pretoria Municipality Quarry Token
Issued to Native labourer for one weeks work. The labourer on handing over this token got his money for the week. Used between 1913 and 1959. Measures approx. 2.8 cm in diameter.
Finally my mind can rest on this one :o ;D
-
Well done ! A positive outcome. The research is just as much fun as the detecting.
-
I think they punch the holes once e token has been redeemed
-
Lol Oldsalty
I have to agree. I just could not get my mind off from not knowing what it is. I knew it was old and had significance but could not lay my finger on it. A war medal did not make sense in an abandoned / demolished "multi racial township" area. This on the otherhand makes perfect sense.
Agree Darrenjay
This is quite possibly true. Will have to investigate it. Apparently the redeemed the token for money. Have not read up on it as yet.
What a great ending for this weekend. love it!! :P
-
Awesome..I get goosebumps when someone finds things from way back when. This is what its all about. The research, the find, the research again..just makes you want to hunt hunt hunt.
-
I wonder how much beer those wages could buy.
Awesome find!
-
Well, I hit Lady Selborne again today. Have to finish the area before the RDP houses project starts. As soon as this happens, all history will be lost forever.
Appart from the usual junk metal, bottle caps and rusted tins I must say I had some interesting finds today.
Below the following:
A) 2 x Old spoons - Possibly old desert spoons. This now brings the total to 5 spoons in this area without a single one being the same as the other.
B) A small bottle - Suspect it might be a small perfume bottle of sorts.
C) Rusted old padlock with makings "RD" in front.
Last but not least the items of the day that really made me jump for joy. Yes, I know that a lot will not agree or share my enthusiasm but to me they are awsome!!!
D) 1 x Live .303 round with markings RL II C - 303 Mk 2 Cordite charge bullet manufactured by the Royal Laboratory, Woolwich Arsenal, Kent England. The stopped manufacturing in 1957 - I am of oppinion that this bullet might have bee accidently dropped by a policeman during the eviction of the Lady Selborn residents and the demolishment of their homes in the early 1950's.
E) The brass centre piece of an old wooden ruler - I almost did not recognise it but recalled my late father having one of these when I was a kid. They used to fold open and extend to about a meter in lenght.
F) My pride and joy - A Pretoria Cycle / Rywiel Bicycle License Tag valid from July 1950 to June 1951 as indicated on the tag. I love it. Just awsome!!
Well, since I am on annual leave I guess Lady Selborne will be my hunting ground in days to come. I have till 6 October to work through the area before it is back to work. That is my 2 cents worth for the weekend thus far. Coil to the soil boys and girls.......
-
Oops...Almost forgot. Found another interesting piece.
It seems to be a brass cap or lid or something made by Guest & Chrimes Ltd, Rotherham, England. No clue what it is though. Established the following regarding the company:
The company produced water pipes, gas pipes and fittings, taps and valves, fire hydrants and water and gas meters.
-
Some awesome finds of history. I hope you do manage to find all the old relics from the past before the RDP houses move in.
-
That looks like a good spot for old stuff. Awesome finds.
-
Well, here is my 2 cents worth on Lady Selborn today. Even had a traffic officer on Motorcycle popping in to see what was going on. Yesterday it was 2 police officers. Must say it makes you feel a bit more at ease in the open veld when they pop in every now and then.... :o
Anyhows, today Lady Selborne gave some history back again:
An old small Lennons bottle (Nice little thing)
A broken metal heart with lettering Pretoria and 1927 stamped on it. Guess its some sort of pendant or something.
A brass lid - Pissibly an old jewelry case or something similar. Like the patterns on it. Pitty the jewelry was nowhere to be found....Lol :o
A bicyble tag again. This one is marked from top to bottom: Wielbelasting, Transvaal, Rywiel, 1958, Cycle, No. 232112, Wheeltax. Imagine that, having to pay tax on your bicycle.....Hehehe :o
A 1952 Georgivs Sextvs Rex 1D Coin.
Did some searching on it and found the following:
The coin is made of bronze and measures 30.8mm in diameter. The front bears an image of King George VI and the words "GEORGIVS SEXTUS REX" (Latin for "George the Sixth, King"). The back bears an image of the a ship (the Dromedaris) on the ocean under full sail, with the date "1952" above, "SOUTH AFRICA" to the right, "SUID-AFRIKA" (Afrikaans for "South Africa") to the left, and "1 D" (abbreviated latin for "One Penny") below. 12,674,000 of these coins were produced for circulation in 1952, with another 16,000 minted in Proof for collectors.
Anyhow, hope you all had a great weekend. For me, tomorrow the hunt continues.....Coil to the soil :P
-
Definately Gremlin. Really some old stuff there. They might not be of significant monetary value but to me anything historic is a great find. Just love old stuff. Love looking them up and seeing how things used to be. Even found some old pot lids today....Lol.
-
Well I was back at L.S again today. Unfortunately the section I did was quite messy with a lot of junk metal. Seems to be the area where one of the houses stood. Uncoverd some window frames and a variety of bottle caps and can lids. Hunting was extremely slow due to the amount of junk causing the Xterra to go mad. Anyway, did find some interesting stuff:
For a change I found a fork and not spoons....Lol :o
A large but severely damaged wrist watch. ::) Does not seem like something old though but must have looked impressive when it was new.
A 1965 Suid Afrika 2 cent
A metal badge still to be identified. I managed to clean it up with after the pic was taken. The soild was severely compacted onto it causing the paint to come off during the cleanup. It is an Eagle perched with spread wings. On top overlapping is the letters CVA. All capital letters with the V in the middle and larger than the other letters. Mystery at this stage.
What can I say, not everyday will turn up fantastic finds but these still get my vote just for being interesting. Back again tomorrow. Lets hope for better hunting. Coil to the soil everyone.
-
You lucky ducky.
Do a quick bid or buy search for "ZAR Silver"
-
Well anotherday done and dusted and I do mean dusted at lady Selborne. Today the lady was very unforgiving and played hard to get in giving up her treasures. It was a long day with only a few things worth mentioning that she only gave up late morning. With that said, it still beats being at work...Lol ;D
A metal trash can lid
A small axe head - Very corroded.
A small brass hosepipe spray nozzle.
A small key - Possibly for a wind up jewelry box or something similar.
A bad condition 1949 South Africa 1 Penny.
Tomorrow is another day I guess. Coil to the soil folks.
-
Lol Grem....Lucky indeed. the veld area I am trying to cover is about 3.5km in radius. Gonna take me ages. There is still a lot of stuff there to be discovered. I just hope I can work through it fast enough before the RDP houses come up. :o
Just to give you an idea. The area marked with yellow is what I need / want to do. The 2 x Little Red blocks are what I am done with.....Eish!!!! :o
-
I shall need to come help you before the property development bee ginns.
An 1800's silver is definitely on my wishlist and I still need to find a Vicky for my wife who has the same name.
I found a crap load of me-namestake George's now. Can't help feeling special.
-
Good finds..wish I could hunt everyday.
-
Lol Fishless. I am on annual leave till 7 October 2013 hence giving me some time to go crazy.
Here is todays hunt. Must say the Lady was really playing hard to get today and kept me begging and pleading again till late morning with the last find just before I left at 13:10. At the end of the day she was willing to give up some of her bounty. :P
A Brass Buckle
Another spoon - This is number 6 for the area.
Another Transvaal Wheel Tax Bicycle Tag of 1959 - This makes it the 4th one for the area.
A 1970 SA 2 Cent
A 1955 South Africa Elizabeth II Regina 1 Penny
A 1918 Georgivs V Dei Gra Britt Omn Rex Fid Def Ind Imp 1 Penny - This came out only moments before I left. So I guess it will be back to business as usual tomorrow morning again.
Keep well everyone. As always, coil to the soil.
-
Yesterday the Lady really kicked my butt and refused to let go. I did manage to reel in some interesting items:
A brass fitting of sorts
A Large Spoon
A Number 8
A Water main tap
A 1958 Transvaal Wheel Tax Bicycle Lisence
:o ??? :o
-
Today however it seems my Lady calmed down and was more willing to give up her treasures. Had a much better day today. And with that my very 1st tickey!!!! :P :P :P :P :P :P
Today's Finds:
A SA Military Medal with date on the back 31-5-1961 8)
A Georgivs VI Rex Imperator 1 Penny - 1940 (Unfortunately the tractors cutting the veld got hold of it....Bit bent but still cool)
A Georgivs Sextvs Rex 1 Penny - 1952
A 1965 South Africa 1 Cent
A 1987 South Africa 1 Cent
A 1943 Georgivs VI Rex Imperator SA 3d (Tickey) ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
All and all a Great day. Hope tomorrow goes even better. Did some scouting in the veld today and found several sports where houses stood accross the road from where I am hunting now.
Anyway, enjoy the weekend all and keep the coil to the soil ;D
-
Hi all. Must say my Lady really played a difficult game today. I decided to go check accross the street from where I usually hunt. Suspect that ticked her off as she really refused to give up her bounty. Did manage to uncover a few things;
Another Primus Head
Some sort of metal cap
Top section of a broken key made by Master Lock Co, Milwaukee USA
Brass piece (top section of a medal)
Another spoon - This is no 7
A suspender / brace clip
Last but not least (at least) A 1945 1/4d - Georgivs VI Rex Imperator - Not in a very good condition though but still worth keeping Lol
Well guys and girls of the Metal Detector World, hope you weekend turned out fine, and as always........Coil To The Soil :P
-
Awesome James. I must say that you are collecting some good stuff from the past.
-
Hi Fishless
Yes, there are deifnatly some good stuff from the past coming out but stand amazed that there are not more coming out. I must say however that due to my race against time and the government building plans, I do not try to recover deep hidden objects nor tagets with mixed traget ID's at this stage. Yes I know that I am probably missing out on a lot of good stuff but will rather work the area through and return for spot checks after my initial shallow sweep if there is time.
I delved a bit into the little history that I could find of the place and stand amazed. The Lady Selborne area was approximately 2.5 Square Km. By 1942, the multiracial Lady Selborne was home to about 22,000 (mostly 'non-white') people, the majority of whom were Northern Sotho. It also included Nguni, Shangaan, Indian, and Chinese people. By the 1960s, there were more than 30 people per stand. This population surge was also due to the large scale rural urban migration driven by a shortage of jobs in the rural areas. The fact that one could hold title to land so close to Pretoria’s city centre made Lady Selbourne an attractive destination for migrant workers. As a result, two-thirds of the residents were tenants.
Many residents owned businesses, and most landowners made extra money by renting out their homes. The township had also many professional people like nurses, doctors and teachers who became instrumental in fighting forced removals. However, most residents were poor subsistence farmers, domestic workers and migrant labourers, who survived through home cultivation, selling wood, coal, and clothes and letting out their homes. The Indian residents were mainly hawkers, while the Blacks focused more on the selling of wood and coal from horse-drawn carts. There was a sense of trust among the community members as hawkers would often give goods on credit to their customers.
With this said and the volume of people in such a small area from 1905 up to 1977 when everything was finally demolished, I am confident that the area will still yield some excellent finds. Time will tell what else we will unearth there. Unfortunately due to work related commitements (albeit in my annual leave period), I will probably miss out on hunting today and tomorrow.
-
The brass fitting from a few posts back is a gas grill head/nozzle.
I found a simmilar one and the shape was just too weird. The gas travels up the sides to the diskish part then from there goes back down to feed a loop with a jet in it, the jet blows up against the disk to flare the gas to make big wide flames and to warm the gas. I wonder what old road side gas light burners looked like and where gas lighting was installed.
Mine has some markings on it. Thermox brand, made in southafrica. Can't find squat on it.
-
You have a huge area there to cover. Wonder if there is anyone else close to you who could help before time runs out. I'd like to see you digging up everything you can before history is lost forever.
-
wow nice finds .....wish I could join you ... :)
-
Hi Gremlin,
Yes it definately is a Gas burner. I found another complete one but only has Primus written on top. It does make you wonder however. I note that the fitting that screws in is quite smaller that our regular gas fittings.
Fishless,
I have a mate here in Cullinan but he is busy with his father's farm noth of Cullinan. He hase been quite successfull in the area lately. I should however be able to cover the area by Nov/Dec this year. It is slow due to me not spot checking the area but physically scanning the veld one section at a time in overlapping sweeps. There is a lot of deeper targets still in the areas that I have done and will get back to them later once my initial sweep is done.
Pit,
It is some great finds yes and hopefully much more to come. If you are in the Pretoria area over a weekend, you are welcome to pop by the veld and go crazy. 8)

Went back for an hour to Lady Selborne again today. Must say things are quite different when comparing Late Winter to now. The place is overgrown like its nobody's business. Only managed a couple of bottle tops today... :-[....Lol Will have to wait for Municipality to cut the grass again....Then, back to business....
Wonder if any of you guys would be interested in a weekend hunt there once the grass is cut. I'm looking at the weekend of 1 and 2 Feb should they cut the grass. Be cautioned however, this was an area where about 2500 people lived before they where all evicted and their homes demolished in the mid 1970's. Had some luck here before with pennies, a 6 pence an 3 pence as well as some bicycle licence tags etc., but a lot of other junk also comes out unfortunately.
-
Late winter early spring it looked like this
-
Today we have this.....Lol, guess that's summer for you hey ;D
-
Wop, wop waaaa... Hehe... Had the same effect this weekend. You can hear the grass grow, in 2 weeks it will bee allmost impossible to get to certain places with the coil.
But seeing those pics makes me lus man.
-
Lol Gremlin
Then you know exactly how I feel at this stage. It is quite a vast piece of veld with hardly any disturbances. There are 2 or 3 bush sleeping scavengers walking about collecting scrap metal for resale but dont really bother me. I normally give scrap Iron dug up to them when they pass along, hence they leave me alone. As soon as that grass is cut I'm back in there on weekends. Have a look at the attached image and check it out on Google Earth. You can clearly see the lines where yards, houses etc was. Yes, certain areas has been turned into dumping areas but there is still a lot of usable terrain of which I have only covered about 1 to 2 % as yet :o. To sum up the Lady Selborne topic so far, this is what I have found there:

Hi Everyone
Well, after a long wait for grass to be cut and heavy rain mixed with additional work loads, I finally got a chance to hunt my favourite "Lady" again last Saturday. Except for the usual junk, I did manage at least to get a 1941 George Rex 1 Penny.
Tomtom was hunting with me and got an old clothes iron base plate.
Hopefully this weekend will go better.
See ya soon and remember to keep Coil to the Soil
-
Got the chance to hunt the "Lady" again this weekend. A lot of junk as usual but did manage some cool stuff also.
2 x 1962 Half Cents
1 x Door Knocker - Lovely piece. Couldn't find the handle though
Pretoria Cycle Tag July 1934 to June 1935
Small coffe grinder or maybe a sharpening device. Not sure.
-
The Door knocker
-
Bicycle Lisence
-
Forgot to mention. TomCat was hunting with me this weekend. Yesterday he managed to pull out a 1942 South Rhodesia George VI Rex Penny. Lucky cat. Was my 1st time to see one. Hopfully he will post a pic durin the week. Well done Tom
-
Fantastic finds JamesK.!
Great pics. and your research work makes this a very interesting read.
One can almost "feel" your enthusiasm on the matter!
-
Nice finds down memory lane.....
-
Thanks Flemish Hunter & Danie
I haven't been detecting very long yet. Will only be a year at the end of July but must say I really really enjoy it. I love to het hold of old pieces of History lost for years and years. The item vaue doesn't bother me. Its the thrill of the find and the discovery in some cases of the origins thereof that keeps me in the field for hours every weekend. I can not believe there is a better, more satisfying or more rewarding hobby out there.
Hopefully on the long weekend of 18 to 21 April I will go down to Middelburg again to do some further hunting in the Boer War sites around Kanon Kop (Cannon Hill) where we had the great finds late last year. Hopefully one day I will be a master detectorist but for now, a novice Hobbyist is enough for me ;D
-

I agree with you...100%

As promised in te earlier posts, herewith the South Rhodesia One Penny found by TomCat this weekend.
-
Hi There Guys and Girls. Here are some more finds I had with JamesK in the area. The little truck was hand made in England during the period 1912 to 1920.
-
Again a nice selection of finds!
The clock...Still working? ;D
-
Also had the opportunity to hit Lady Selborne again in recent weeks. The grass and reeds has not yet been cut so scanning was quite difficult
-
It seems that my favourite "Lady" missed me..... Had a great hunt this weekend at Lady Selborne together with TomCat and found the unexpected. Now I know many of you might have seen it before but to me it is the 1st time ever. It is a 1963 Unity is Strenght - Een Dragt Maak Magt 5 Cent. It looks like the 6 pence at the back but has a pentagon and not a hexagon shape with the Protea in the middle.
Our finds for the weekend include:
5 Cent 1963
Tickey - Damaged with date not readable
6d (6 Pence) 1943
1/4d (Farthing) 1957 x 2 - (One for me and one for Tomcat)
1/2 Penny 1943
1d (Penny) 1941 and 1955
2 Cent 1966 (Afrikaans)
-
Nice coins guys....did you clean up the silver coins? an if so how do you go about that?
-
Nice coins guys....did you clean up the silver coins? an if so how do you go about that?
I normally clean mine using some bicarb. The type you use for baking. You add a little water to make a paste and then rub the coin with the paste. It shines things up like you won't believe
-
I did exactly the same. Could not get the hard stuck tarnish off though. Was a battle.
-
for my silver coins I use a 30% hydrocloric acid solution. dip the coin in for a couple of seconds and then rub. repeat until all the tarnish is gone and then neutralise with bicarb solution and polish with bicarb paste
put a piece of aluminium foil (shiny side up) in a tub of sorts. place the coins on the foil.
dissolve one spoon of salt in a cup of boiling water and pour onto the coins. leave for 5 mins and rub rub rub
-
some nice finds there James. that area has been good to you.
-
Awesome finds
-
Must say the "Lady" has been really good to me today. Had a really awesome hunt together with TomCat and Jaco (Non-Forum Member). Made it a family outing spending the whole day in the veld trying a new area that we identified over the weekend.
The finds from my side Left to right from the top:
2 x Toy car bodies, one being a old police car of sorts
1948 / 1949 Cycle Lisence
1934/1935 Pretoria Cycle Lisence
Partial 1961/1962 Cycle Lisence
1d (Penny) 1942 - George Rex
1d (Penny) 1952 - George Rex
1d (Penny) 1958 - Elizabeth II
1/4d (Farthing) - 1950 - George Rex
1/2 Cent 1963 - Eendrag Maak Mag
1 Cent 1971
3d (Tickey) 1934 George Rex (With Crown)
That makes 7 x Coins in total.
After this, I handed the 305 to Jaco to hunt a while. From his side, 2 more coins. A 1d 1942 and a 1/2 Cent 1961.
Wich I could have hunts like this everyday. Well tomorrow we are back there again. Hopefulle my "Lady" will be generous and keep on giving. Coil to the soil everyone.
-
And so, the lady smiles upon you once again James
nice variety of things
love these old metal dinky toy cars....they were so well made
-
So true indeed luuk. My Lady was really good to us today. Love the toys too. Just wish I could get some in better condition you know, wheels and all.
-
Nice! If your ticket was 1931 it would have been worth about R20000
-
Eish landuse. I keep missing it mate. Today was a 1934. At the GoMinelabbing event it was a 1933. The 31 just don't want to come out. Guess I'll have to keep coil to the soil and keep diggin it :P
-
I am just waiting for the day I see a 1931.
-
Me to!
Because that will be the day you can pay for my airline ticket, so I can do a spot of metal detecting in S.A.! ;D ;D ;D
-
Me to me maties. Lol Alain. With a good hunt and the right finds thereafter, it could become possible
-
Me to!
Because that will be the day you can pay for my airline ticket, so I can do a spot of metal detecting in S.A.! ;D ;D ;D
We would be glad to have you :)
-
Well, another weeekend of great hunting lies behind me with a week's wait in anticipation for more. My Lady has been a bit unforgiving today but what she did eventually release was awesome.
Finds for the day:
An old brass broach. Lovely flower pattern.
A 1/4d (Farthing) 1956 Elizabeth II
A 1/2d (Penny) 1942 George Rex VI Imperator
My personal absolute favourite in Lady Selborne thus far.......A Royal Air Force (RAF) Flat Button possibly World War II and definately pre 1959. I have attached similar buttons found on the internet research as reference.
Anyway, hop you guys and girls had an awesome weekend. As always, keep the coil to the soil.
-
WOW!!! Again top finds James.

Nice work James....this thread is like reading a book on Lady Selborne..
-
Lol Tony it is hey. I like to keep finds of each area I visit together on seperate threads. It sometimes feels like I am writing the history of Lady Selborne all over again brining lost history back to life through this thread. You will not believe how small of a section we have covered of the entire area to date in basically almost a year of hunting there.
The image below shows where we have hunted thus far in the RED blocks with the larger yellow area being the rest of the area still to be discovered. Believe me when I say that amongst all the trash in that veld still lies a vast amount of history to be unearthed. ;D
-
Well done James. Cant wait for your next chapter..lol
-
Yes, well done
-
Well done Boeta she smiled on you again
-
J,
I commend you for the historical angle and your perseverance to unearth and conserve relics of a bygone age. There are some among us that simply sees the monetary value. They cannot perceive the true joy of holding something in your hand that might be worth a few rand or nothing at all, but is either a puzzle to be solved or a another piece of the jigsaw. And when you find that one piece that induces you to jump up and down and act like a complete loon - it’s just fine, because that carries sweetness and a joy de vivre that the ignorant will never know.

Thanks Wilhelm for your inspirational and very true words.

Well boys and girls, today my Lady really smiled graciously on me and got me so exited I was jumping and shouting out of pure joy. To what I can establish, Lady Selborne was a very poor community if I look what we continiously find there. Things like Singleton Super Methol Snuff Tins, Primus Heads, and low monetary value money such as 1/4d, 1/2d, 1d, 3d and 6d coins.
Today started a new chapter in the book of my Lady. The seach for more. Up to so far in almost a year hunting there, I have not found a single piece of silver above a 6d. Today however, giving a perfect constant 40 signal on the X-terra 305 came out a very tarnished 1932 George Rex V 2 Shilling. My first one ever. Believe me, you could hear me shout miles away. I managed to get it cleaned up a bit but a lot more work will be needed to get the tarnish off.
I know for a lot of you out there it might be a very common find, but for me this was my 1st in the Shilling range ever. Sadly also I have to think back to the poor soul who lost it. Thinking back, this could probably have been a week's pay for some family. So there we have it. Today's finds:
1932 George Rex V 2 Shilling
1953 Elizabeth II 1/4d (Farthing)
-
Way to go James.
Although I have found many silver coins, i still rejoice everytime i find one and strangely enough also think of the person who lost such coin
-
Myself and Tomcat went for a quick hunt this morning with Wilhelm on the farm where TomCat managed to hit a 1 x Penny. After about 2 to 3 hours we decided to return back to my sweet Lady. Must say, once again she did not hold back and gave her all at the end of the day. I stand amazed......Yesterday after almost a year hunting the Lady, she gave up her 1st large silver. Today she made it 2 in a row with yet another 2 Shilling. Wow....Two in two days...Love it.
Herewith todays finds:
1/4d 1950 - Georgivs Sextvs Rex
1/4d 1958 - Elizabeth II Regina
1/2 cent 1964 - Een Drag Maak Mag / Unity Is Strength
1d 1940 - Georgivs VI Rex Imperator
2 Shilling 1955 - Elizabeth II Regina
TomCat also managed another 1/4d which I am sure he will post at some stage.
-
Here are a clear pic of the 2 shilling as well as me and TomCat after a long day. Tomorrow it is off to visit my sweet Lady again. Lol :) 8)
Hope you all had a great day and a even better one tomorrow.
-
well done again James and Tomcat.
I like the coins and they are still in good nick too.
hope you have a bumper day tomorrow
-
Hope so too luuk. Still waiting to hear from TomCat if he is going with, but me....I'm definately there ;)
-
Great stuff :D ;D
-
Is there Brandy in that coke?
-
Well done. You must have been happy when the silver showed itself
-
Is there Brandy in that coke?
Lol Tony, Nope. Never mix Brandy with my Captain Morgan. Hehehehehe ;)
-
Well done. You must have been happy when the silver showed itself
Lol Landuse. Happy as a dog in a sausage factory. But thats nothing. You should have seen me today. Was dancing a jig like a creazy man. :o
-
Well what can I say, today was a very wierd and interesting day. Lets start off with the wierd. Normally when we dig up scrap metal, we leave it visible for the bush sleepers / scrap metal collectors to come and pick up and have build quite a good relationship with some of them. What do you know. Today one oke came around and brought me a couple of coins he picked up on the surface where the veld was burned (Obviously it cost me R 20-00 for the lot, but don't really care.....It is now part of my collection Hehehehe. What was very interesting was the assortment he found from left to right and top to bottom:
TOP
1967 Australian 20 cent
2006 Mozambique 10 Meticas
2006 Namibian $1
1991 France 1/2 Franc
MIDDLE
2003 Great Brittan 1 Penny
1963 SA 1/2 cent
1943 SA 1/4d (Farthing)
BOTTOM
3 x SA 1 cents - 1985 / 1987 / 1976
SA 2 cent - No visible date - Needs serious cleaning
1984 SA 5 cent
-
Myself and Tomcat hunted from about 09:00 to 13:00 and had a very slow day. Fortunately my sweet lady did manage to give me some finds that really made me jump for joy before doing a rain dance like a crazy man just before we left.
1st to come out was a s George Rex VI Shilling- The front side is in a great condition but the back is so worn that no date is visible. All I know is that these where minted between 1937 to 1947 before the VI was changed to Sextvs.
Lastly came my pride and joy. A medal in honour of the coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth with the specific date 12-5-1937 with the king an queen on the one side. On the reverse is a Male and female lion with the words "Union of South Africa - Unie Van Suid Afrika"......... Man, this blew me away.
As we left, I found 2 gents doing some metal detecting in the area. The 1st to see anyone there in the last year. Obviously curious I went to have a look and chat. What do you know....The found a similar medal but from 1947 (10 years later) with the state emblem on the one side and the images of the king and queen on the other. These came from the royal visit to South Africa in 1947.
The plot thickens and things just get better. I just can't wait for next weekend to get back in there. If anyone is interested in joining us. We (TomCat and I) are normally there anything from 8:30 during weekends. Give us a shout.
-
great stuff there guys!!! well done
you have some well trained coin collectors there as well ;D ;D
-
Lol luuk. Always good to have an apentice...Hehehehe ;D Even had on bypasser asking me for pricing on the machines. Eish, gotta shock of his life when hearing the price. :'(
-
Well done Boeta the Lady smiled on us again this weekend.
-
Hey I dig the medal!!....nice going James
-
My findings at Lady Selborn with James
-
James and Tomcat,
Well done.............and I declined the offer to join, silly silly me.
-
Yes the Lady smiled on us next tie you must come with
-
The offer stands Wilhelm. The Garretts are teaming up on me. Seems we are gonna be 4 hunters on Saturday of which 3 will be running Garrett Ace 250's. Think we are going to have a great little hunt there. ;)
-
Well, what can I say. The Lady truely delivered again today. First and foremost a word of gratitude to everyone that joined our hunt today. We ended up putting 5 machines in the field. Thanks to Darren and Shaun coming over from Jhb and Benoni. Also thanks to Tom and Eric here from Pta. We had a great day. Here are some pictures.
And so the hunt began.
-
What really took the cake was to see how an open piece of veld was able to bring 5 grown men to their knees. The lady was definately wearing the pants in this relationship today. When she said kneel, they knelt. Hehehehehe.
-
Darren taking the find of the day. A 1903 penny (Duiwel's Penny) pre dating the establishiment of Lady Selborne by 2 years. Well done Darren for now having found the Oldest coin in Selborne to date.
And then there was me finding a 1935 King Geoge Rex V penny.
-
My finds of note (coin wise) for the day:
1935 SA 1d - Georgivs V Rex Imperator
1941 SA 1d - Georgivs VI Rex Imperator
1942 SA 1d - Georgivs VI Rex Imperator
1945 SA 1d - Georgivs VI Rex Imperator
1961 SA 1 Cent - Eendag Maak Mag / Unity Is Strenght
All and all if not mistaken about 15 coins came out today along with some other interesting and cool finds. Darren, Tom, Eric and Shaun......Please dont forget to post your finds, photos and comments here. Once again thanks to everyone being there today. We should really do this more often.
-
hey James
you guys seem to have had a fun day out there. I like the pics.....good to see guys out enjoying themselves

-
Hey luuk. We definately had a blast. Like I said, we all should arrange informal hunts like this on a more frequent basis. I am contemplating of calling a monthly Lady Selborne hunt on the 1st or last weekend of every month for guys coming from abroad. I think it would definately be worth it. For the guys in Pretoaria, you are welcome to join me and Tom over weekends. We are in Selborne every Saturday, Sunday and Public Holiday almost without exception. ;)

-
Hi James just want to say thanks to you and Tomcat for a fun filled day of detecting it was a blast I would recomend this to all detecting enthusiasts. I managed to find an old police badge I was so chuffed trying to post a photo but phone giving problems will post it when I sort the problem out. if all goes well hopefully see you this weekend. cheers.
Eric
-
Congratulations guys - nice collection of coins.
-
Hi Eric. Thanks for being there mate. Pitty you did not come through today. Shaun and I had a blast. Abouth 20 x Coins came out between the two of us today. Was an awesome hunt. Hope to see you for sure next weekend.
-
With Tomcat occupied / otherwise tied up today, Shaun and I hit Lady Selborne today. We were up to a slow start but soon enough my sweet Lady opened her heart and treasures to us and managed to deliver one of my best hunts at Selborne over the last 11 months. Today was reallt totally awesome. What really made today special to me was the discovery of a 1905 Duiwels Penny. 1905 was the year Lady Selborne was established so to me, the penny in all its glory represents Selborne.
-
From here, things just got more and more interesting. I found a little box thought to be a snuff contained. After carefull examination, I discovered that it was in fact a Brass Single Condom holder. The original melted condom over years of heat and annual veld fires is still partially visible on the inside.
-
Then there was the "Mysetery Coin" being 28mm in diameter. It looks like it has a George Rex head in front. Unfortunately the build up and patina is so thick that I can not make out anything. I do not believ it to be a penny however as it is a bit smaller. The question is: "Do I risk damaging the coin through thorrough cleaning, or do I leave it a Myster???? Do clean or not to clean....That is the question??"
The marking at the back looks like a single bar running top to bottom. Any Ideas on possible Id...Anyone??
-
Last but not least....All the finds of significance for the day...Top to bottom and left to right....
Condom Holder
1962 Transvaal Wheel Tax Bicycle Tag
1930 Hercules Cycle Tag
Little Brass Breach (Folded double)
2 x Small Keys and A pin of some sorts with the letted "D"

2 x 1942 SA 1d - Georgivs VI Rex Imperator
2 x 1953 SA 1d - Elizabet II Regina
1962 SA 1/2 CENT - Eendarg Maak Mag / Unity Is Strenght
1964 SA 1/2 CENT - Eendarg Maak Mag / Unity Is Strenght
1941 SA 1/4 d - Sprayed Silver with 4 holes drilled in. Coin was modified into a button ans sprayed silver.

1958 SA 6d - Elizabeth II Regina
1939 SA 3d - Georgivs VI Rex Imperator
1967 SA 1 Cent - Van Riebeeck (Suid Afrika)
And last but not least......."THE MYSTERY COIN"
-
After all this excitement today I started wondering....Exacatly what have I recovered form Lady Selborne to date in the last 11 Months of weekend hunting. I took some time to unpack and sort everything and was shocked to see....Its amazing what a wonderfull treasure chest an open piece of veld can truely become (be)....
Bicycle Licences (Wheel Tax Tags) = 15
1/4d (Farthings) = 10
1/2d = 3
1d (Penny) - 25 (3 x Duiwels Pennies)
3d (Tickey) = 4
6d (Six Pence) = 4
1 Shilling = 1
2 Shilling = 2
1/2 Cents = 7
5 Cent (Old Een Drag Maak Mag Silver) = 1
1 Cent (Old Large with Ox Wagon) = 1
1 Cent (Small) = 7
2 Cent = 4
Total Coins in Lady Selborne to Date dig by myself (Exludes finds by other Parties) = 69

-
The gun looks like a lonestar gambler
It sure does
-
Tom,
That takes me right back to my boyhood - a potato gun
Next is that illusive duiwelspennie!!
-
You don't get many toys made out of metal anymore
-
That gun is boss, i have four at home. Cap and spud combo...... I just found my second duiwels penny for this week at my local park :D I have hunted that area so many times with my ace 250, but was digging every decent signal with my at pro. Found 90 coins with at pro this week in the park while testing the machine
-
Awesome coin
-
Very nice
-
Nice one Darren...The AT pro is a coin machine....set the AT to pro mode zero with discrim. on 34 and if you get a constant 82 to 85 you can be sure is a coin, bottle to will bounce between 78 and 81. Good luck with it!
-
Sweet thanks for tip Tony!

Hi Darren
Did some Googling. It is definately a mouthpiece. Not sue of exactly what make in specific. Have a look at this link on ebay of a very similar piece.

Shaun, Eric and Myself took another shot at Laday Selborne again today but was met with some resistance from my sweet Lady. We seem to have hit a grid with a lot of trash with slow and inconsistant payoffs. Eventually, she did deliver some finds at the end. What was interesting was that some pendants etc. came out today making a interesting hunt. Shaun managed 10 x Coins and a heart shaped pendant, Eric managed a pendant with a horse on. As for myself, I got 7 x Coins and a nice small pendant with two Scottish Terriers. Thought it was silver initailly but seems to be brass of=r something similar.
Herewith my finds for today:
1d - 1943
1/2d - 1942
1/2d - 1944
1/4d - 1943
1/4d - 1955
1/4d - 1955
6d - 1936
And of course the little doggies.
Looking back over the weekend I truely stand amazed. 34 coins yesterday and another 17 today giving a total of 51 coins in one weekend. Awesome indeed.
-
That looks correct hey, thanks for the info :)
-
That's just incredible...well done guys. My son and I found three coins this weekend.A 1922 penny, a 1896 penny and a 1893 sixpence.

Looks like there was a bank on the site the way you guys are finding coins..lol

Wow Tony. Well done mate. 1800's still elude me in Pretoria. Have only found 3 of them in Middelburg thus far being the 1898 Sovereign, 1898 Six Pence and the 1878 Three Pence. My oldest coin in Pretoria to date is the 1905 Penny.
-
Looks like there was a bank on the site the way you guys are finding coins..lol
Lol Fishless, it does seem that way doesn't it. The finds in the area is solely due to the high volume of people residing in a very small area. As I said before, Lady Selborne was established in 1905. By 1942, the multiracial Lady Selborne was home to about 22,000 (mostly 'non-white') people, the majority of whom were Northern Sotho. It also included Nguni, Shangaan, Indian, and Chinese people. By the 1960s, there were more than 30 people per stand.
The scores of people in the area makes for good hunting grounds. Unfortunately the also generated a lot of Trash and Ash Pits. Yesterday was one of thouse days where we hit more Ash Pits than anything else. Lol. Hopefully next week we will be on better hunting grounds again.
-
Indeed the Lady Smiled again well done Mates
-
Well done James,
Good haul for the day. About those ash pits - do you find old bottles?
Greetings

Well, decided to do a quick 30min hunt after a long day at work giving me time to unwind, take stock and plan strategies with no disturbances, and what do you know.......Another 1d George Rex VI 1942 popped out. At least I did not arrive home empty handed. Lol. Maybe I should do this every afternoon. Just hectic cold out there.... :o
-
It seems like a good plan mate
-
You should come and join in on afternoon hunts Tom ;D
-
Did another quick 45 min hunt after work today at my favourite Lady of Selborne. Must say it is freezing out there at sunset.....Anyhows, did manage at least to recover a 1d 1956 and another 1/2 Cent 1961. Well, tomorrow is another day. Any finds is always better than nothing.....Untill tomorrow, keep Coil to the Soil mates... ;)

Hunting was a bit low yesterday. Only managed obe coin, 1/2d 1952. Did find a lock, a couple of bicycle lisence tags (1956-1957, 1936-1937 and 1957-1958). Also found a small disk with a windmill on it (Strange :o)
-
Today made for a bit better hunting than yesterday. Managed to get a old toy truck, a large very old padlock that swings open, a heart shaped 1940 Hercules Municipality Dog Lisence and 3 coins:
1/4d 1944
1/2d 1953
and my 1st ever Zuid Afrika Coin, a Penny of 1930
-
Oops, forgot the coins...

Great stuff guys! So sad I couldn't make this weekend but hopefully soon again!
We understand DJ. I know you would have been here if you could. Hope all goes well on your side. See you soon again.
-
;D Nice as always James , bumer i had to work this weekend ,
-
Yeap, we missed you there this weekend mate.
-
Well, it was off to Lady Selborne again as usual.....Lol.....As usual she did not dissappoint. Decided to hunt a section I partially hunted when I just started with the Hobby a year ago and still had no knowledge of how my machine works. Those days is was more trail and error than anything else. Eric also joined in today and managed to pick up an awesome BP Token of Sally Little - Aparently a famous golfer.
I managed to get a few coins:
1 Cent 1961
1d Penny 1942
1/2d 1935 (Damaged with hole drilled in over date)
3 pence 1926.....Love this one
Also got 3 x Old 2 cents and 4 x Small 1 cents which was very corroded. Did not even bother to include in the pics. Obviously it will be business as usual tomorrow so, anyone looking will know where to find me....Hehehehe....Coil to the soil mates.
-
Awesome finds James.
I'm always surprised with the excellent condition of the coins.
Maybe it has something to do with the soil condition or the metal composition of the coins?
Well done mate!!!
-
It could be the soil content. All coins I find is washed under running water. Thereafter I dry it and rub it with some vasaline to bring out the dark colour and get rid of the dullness. From there it is wiped off lightly and stored. Might be the vasaline (petrolium jelly) also. Most coins are however in a very nice condition. The silver one's are normally quite tarnished when I get it out but a few minutes in silver dip dolution normally sorts that out. ;)
-
Hi, Are you guys hunting Lady Selborne tomorrow?
I took a "sabbatical", as I had some exams to pass - haven't hunted in a month :P.
I am now going out tomorrow and next week Saturday - thought I might join you?
-
Hi RockShandy
My family (wife and son) and I will definately going out again tomorrow and believe TomCat will also be joining. Not sure if Eric is going to be there. You are more than welcome to join in mate. I understand from Eric you are also from around here. Would be nice to meet yet another forum member in person. I should be around there at from about 08:00-08:30 onwards for most of the day depending on the finds. If we hit a sweet spot again like a few weeks ago, we normally run to sundown...Hehehehe.
Hope to see you there mate. I will post the current hunt area pic and co-ordinates shortly.
-
Here are the current hunt area co-ords
Lat: 25°41'43.63"S
Long: 28° 7'40.47"E
See you there.
-
Great - see you there at about 08:00 :)
-
All the best for tomorrow guys and good luck! :)
-
Enjoy guys!

Yet another successfull and ery interesting hunt behind us again today at Lady Selborne and as usual our fair lady delivered. Today saw TomCat, RockShandy, Carl, Gawie and myself in the veld. In total I believe about 15 to 20 coins came out again. Appart from that saw 2 x SADF Medals dated 31-05-1965 some nice buckles etc.
My finds included:
1d 1939
1d 1942
1d 1950
1/2d 1957
1/4d 1943
1c 1974
1 Shilling 1955
6 Pence (Brittish) Edward VII - Coin badly warn on reverse side with no date visible. Catalogue indicates that these coins with Edward facing right have only been minted between 1902 to 1910.
Also found a token or medal "Ex Unitate Vires" with number 274 at the back. Initially thought it was a municipal quarry token like the one I found last year but is not. Still don't have any idea of its history.......
Lastly alos foung a SAR&H Institute Durban Badge. I know it is some sort of badge of the South African Railways & Harbours but could not google anything like this to establish furthe information.
All and all a very successfull hunt again.
-
Yet another successful hunt! :)
Little by little you guys are unearthing the history of that place.
Must be so exiting to puzzle together bits that made every day life back then!
Sometimes when I find a, say, 200 or 300 year old coin I let my fantasy go wild: wondering what the person looked like, how he was dressed in those days and what he/she did for a living.
Do you guys sometimes wonder who the owner was from an item you find there at the Lady?
Anyway, Very well done guys!!!!
"Ex Unitate Vires" Eendrag maakt mag.
A little difference in the spelling, but the SA and Flemish language are like far cousins!(Ilike! :D)
The same text here on some older Belgian coins I found from the late 19 century, early 20 century .One can read 'Eendracht maakt macht'
(https://metaldetectingforums.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1259.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fii551%2Fsteppenwolf1%2FCoins2012034.jpg&hash=14db153f08848f8525f1e78f1e8ea35562c467f9) (http://s1259.photobucket.com/user/steppenwolf1/media/Coins2012034.jpg.html)
Sorry for the other old coins.I found those coins in my garden and put them in one pic. last year or so! :D
Happy hunting friends, and bring on the goodies!!!!
Alain

Wow again - thats all I can say. I got there at 10:00 - got out my stuff - started detecting, and when I looked up it was near 15:00!
My second time out and my total pre-1965 coin count stands at 17 coins - and one Medal!
It is a 1961 Republic South Africa Bilingual Medal. I also found half of a Universal Army Belt Buckle. Also found a metal fork handle, a brass tap and a "Krost" key with the # 0013 on the back.
One possible shoe buckle and one other belt buckle with a bunch of washers, oh, and a partial Bedford Truck Steel Plate "Bedfo". The coins are as follows:
1/4d 1955 & 1957
1/2d 1942,
1/2 c (date Illegible)
1d 1929, 1954,
6d 1952,
1s 1937, 1954
Yes, 2 x 1 Shillings ;D
Thanks to all for a Lekka outing - and a special thank you to your wife James, I think I would have heat exhaustion / dehydration if she was not there :)
Looking good for coming out on Sunday again :)

Trash was plentifull yes, but it was still woth the outing...A bad day detecting always beats a good day at work ;D
I did manage a few coins with the 2 x 1962 1/2 Cents being directly on top of each other. Rest assusred that next week we will probably be in for some good hunting again on both Saturday and Sunday. 1/2 cent 1961
1/2 cent 1962

If you can perceive it - you can achieve it.
-
Now we know what to look for James maybe we will find it, we most lickly missed it and dont know it.
-
17 pages on one topic has to be a record!!!.....this post is so cool..its like reading a book that's written one day at a time......Great effort to all involved
-
It is true Tony....We try to keep it going as long as hunting space exists at Lady Selborne. That is why I always request the guys hunting with me to post their finds here, thus keeping the collection together. History through this topic is revealing itself piece by piece. I love it! Thanks to evryone actively involved helping me to keep this topic fresh and updated. It has now been a year of posting and believe that we should with the re-sweep of the veld and the areas not even touched yet still be busy for at least another year or so.....Well, hopefully that is ;D
-
Hopefully we will be able to hunt for more that a year at Selborne mate still lots to find, my son said only silver for tommorows hunt
-
Good luck for the weekend Tom and the guys. Will be thinking of you while away this weekend. Keep coil to the soil mates.
-
Hey James! Looks like you find all the interesting stuff!!! Keep going!
-
Well guys and girls, it was business unusual again today at Selborne with some wierd and wonderfull things coming out of the sweet lady's soil. The hunt was difficult, trash plentyfull and finds taking evasive manouvers as the machines bleeped and peeped through the veld all day.
I was joined by Tomcat, Eric, RockShandy and Shaun. A slow day turned into a digging frenzy with low yields as every bleeping bottlecap just had to give that perfect "Penny" signal on the 305. Fortunately, the wifey was on duty keeping the refreshments coming and had a huge pile of snacks on standby that she stood making the whole day yesterday.
Anyhows, with the day done and dusted I ca still report that we did not leave empty handed.
Eric found a very nice military badge which he will probably post later.
TomCat found an excellent metal Toy Soldier.....
RockShandy found a coin or two or three or so....
Shaun found a couple of coins, and
As for me, I got a 2 Shilling 1957, 1/2 Cent 1961 and 1964, Hercules Municipality Cycle Tag 1940 to 1941, and a very wierd disk with 4 x Expiry dates on it (Still to figure this one out)
Thanks everyone for beaing there today and taking part in Jnr's bithday celebration albeit a week or two late. It really meant a lot to him..... See you guys again tomorrow morning.... Till then, keep coil to the soil mates
-
Here are the coin close-ups also
-
Some more awesome finds. Well done James. Cant wait to see what tomorrow brings..lol
-
Well once again RockShandy and I hit the same area we did yesterday at Lady Selborne. It was a slow start with trash abound and without end, yet slowly but surely in the late afternoon our Lady stayed true to her reputation and did not fail to deliver her treasures. All and all the trash dug throughout the day became all worth the effort. Initially I found a coin spill with 3 x 1/2d in close proximity followed by Bottle Tops, Bottle Tops and.......Well you might have guessed....More Bottle Tops....Well, that was until........ :o
Late afternoon RockShandy recovered a very nice badge suspected to be an military rank or something and managed a few coins also amongst other things he is yet to post.
I on the other hand just had to do the Selborne jig when I pulled out my first ever 2 1/2 Shilling....Boy oh boy was this a great feeling. You should have been there to appreaciate the sight....Lol
With the day over and the tally done I had the following in my pocket:
1958 Transvaal Wheel Tax Disk
1958 Pretoria Wheel Tax Disk
1940/1941 Hercules Municipality Wheel Tax Disk
1d 1952
1d 1951
1/2d 1953
1/2d 1941
1/2d 1942
1/2d 1940
And obviously my pride and joy....2 1/2 Shilling 1953
A great end to a great weekend. Well guys and girls, stay tuned for the next chapter.....Thill then, keep coil to the soil mates.
-
And here the close-ups of my baby....Just love this....
For those out there who is yet to find one of these the following.....
On the Xterra 305 it gives a full solid 36 Penny signal
On the Ace 250 it gives a solid penny signal on the 10 cent mark.
-
James my friend, you pulled it off again!!!!!
I love every episode of your finds.
It's like a good book, wance you start reading, you can't stop!
This book is called: ' Former "Lady Selborne Area'!
Very well done James,your a champ. ;D
I like the ol' bicycles tags!!!
-
The coins....ahhhhh!!!!!....I wish I found coins like that!!!
-
Thanks for your kind words Alain.....Myst say after 18 pages and countless replies allready it is starting to feel line a novel....lol...Also love them old Cycle tags.....It is history in the open.
-
The coins....ahhhhh!!!!!....I wish I found coins like that!!!
I don't really know why but for the age of some of these babies that we have found thus far, they seem to come out in rock hard ground in a very well preserved state....Love it ;D
-
Good soil I think James.
I found in the back of our garden coins from 1600, 1700.Some in good shape, others I could hardly read.
So many factors ....
I guess we should be glad, every time we unearth some of our history.
Because (little)things, every day stuff, like that, gives us a better understanding on how our grant parents lived and laboured to make a living .
I n times like this, I wish my English was better, because than I could say more about this.
-
Your enlish is fine mate....Nobody here worries about perfect spelling or anything. We all just need to get our message accross one way or another. It seems that your home language and mine being Afrikaans is axtually very closely related. ;)
And yes, history brought out surely brings us closer to our roots and to the past
-
Awesome stuff James! Congrats on the half crown! Beautiful coin. I also found my first two this week, will post photos tomorrow
-
Howzit Darren.....Thought you went AWOL on us mate....Must say it was one heck of a awesome feeling when I saw what it was.... :P
-
Nothing beats that's feeling of finding that huge silver! I'm laughing just imaging your famous happy jig hahah
-
Howzit Darren.....
Yes, I should not worry about the spelling! ;D
-

Lol, believe me I did mate.
@ Alain....Spelling is Over Rated anyhows....Heheheheh
-
;)
-
Oy, that Jig - I wish I had recorded it! :)
I also had a great day at Lady Selborne. Not so many coins as the first two times there, but lots of different items.
These include:
A Nice lighter with the name "Dave" inscribed on it,
A medal with a man running on it with 2 wreaths (Still un-identified as to where it comes from)
The following coins:
1/4d 1941
1/d 1955
1d 1950
1d 1928 (my oldest coin I have ever found)
Just as the sun was setting, I got a decent hit and looking down, saw what we thought was a button. It was just lying there in plain sight. I took a pic of it, then popped it out, and it turned out to be either a shoulder or cap badge - a "pip" or rank indicator for Officers that is based on the Star of the Military Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath.
It has the words "Tria Juncta In Uno" on it which translates to '3 join to become one', a reference to the 3 countries that became the United Kingdom.
What a great day!
:)
-
Thanks for a great day mate....That badge really put the cherry on top of the cake. It is one seriously awesome find....Truely awesome
-
Some amazing finds from you guys. So when are you opening the Museum ??
-
Oi......Lol Peter

-
Great find guys. Keep it up
-
Super finds this is history revived...
-
Well done James - nice variety, and of course the beautiful coin, a moment to treasure.
-
Morning All
I was there on Saturday Morning. 9-1, trash, trash and more trash. Then the Lady delivered literally on my very last dig of the day!. This is a SA infantry school military badge. Looks like they are based in Oudshoorn. Thanks guys for a lekka dig, and the picnic lunch provided by Charmaine was to die for - 5 star buffet lunch at Lady Selborne. Thanks a million.
-
Great badge. I still have to find one
-
I had a nice day on Saturday as-well no coins but an old toy car and ornament
-
Well done to the Lady Selborne Musketeers - interesting finds.

This truely was a nice find Eric, and as for the lunch.....Well we intend to do some sort of a lunch once a month in the future....Thanks for a trashy but great hunt though
-
I had a nice day on Saturday as-well no coins but an old toy car and ornament
I must say Tom, I think the Toy Soldier was an excellent find mate
-
Hi Boeta thanks to the wife for the snacks
-
I have to agree with James - you do not find toy soldiers like that, in that condition, too often - Great find!
-
Thanks mate I like it as-well
-
Had a quick 1 1/2 hour hunt at our fair Lady again this afternoon and managed to recover 2 x Large 1 Cents (1961 to 1964). After speaking to a coin collector yesterday I decided to do a bit of experimenting on them. The pics below shows the coins after being rinsed (No rubbing or scrubbing) in warm water and dish liquid.
From here the same 2 coins are being soaked in Acetone. I am going to leave them a overnight and will post results tomorrow.....Lets hope I do not mess them up. To what I understand, Acetone will not damage the coin nor the patina, but will only react and remove "Organic" material traces on the coin.....Let's hope ::)
-
I hope that works James as it would be an easy way to clean coins. All the other methods take too long..lol
-
Holding thumbs!
-
This should be interesting.
-
Hopefully you left some coins for me James
-
Well boys and girls, the verdict is in. As said, I left the coins for 24 hours and took them out when I got home. Gave them a rinse in Hot water with some very light toothbrush scrubbing (Not recommended with valuable coins - The scrubbing that is). After this, I gently rubbed them with some Vasiline (Petrolium Jelly). Must say they did not come out bad at all. Almost all organic matter is gone but patina seems to be in tact. Still some dirt on it left though but could have been easily removed with a toothpick or something. I was so exicted that I had to do another experiment which I will post later. Anyhow, herewith the pics of the results.
-
Thanks James, appreciate the sharing. Will follow suit.
-
Looking good after cleaning
-
Wow - can't believe they are the same coins! I am going to try it on one of the coins that I cannot see the date due to excess crustiness!
-
Nice going James!!....thanks for the idea and the test report the samples look good!!
-
Tomcat and I went for some hunting again today. The day was slow with some light drizzel in the afternoon. It was quite cloudy and cool.....Lol....And enough with the weather report.
I did manage to pull out some goodies again:
At last my long awaited 1947 Royal Visit Medallion (Of which Tom already has one and Shaun has 2)
3d 1945
1d 1952
1/4d 1950
1/4 1959
-
Looks like you had a good hunt today, James!
Great finds mate :)

Welldone to you both, I can't believe how many coins have come from the Old Lady, what percentage of the area have you guys covered James?
Hi Tony
I thought we where getting to an end only to be informed that the section across the highway is also art of selborne. If this is true, we are at about 40% to 50% at this stage and still have some work to be done. Fortunately with more helping hands and machines in the veld, we are covering the area a bit quicker.
-
We started off on a slow start and even a slower end with some rain interruptions today together with our newest forum member Brendan joining in. At the end of the day though, my "lady" did not dissappoint an gave me some spectacular finds.
In one hole I found 2 x 2 Shillings being a 1941 and a 1954
Also got a nice brass ornate plate of some sorts
1d 1938
1 Shilling in close proximity of the 2 Shillings being 1941
1/4d (Too encrusted to see date)
A button with an Archer riding a chariot that is drawn by what seems to be a deer??? WTF?
And my pride and joy ..... A brass buttong with an very old steam locomotive enscribed in front "Hollandsche Spoorweg Maatschappij" and lettering G.R.A Amsterdam at the back.
To what I can tell the specifing rail road company was commissioned in 1839 and ran to 1939
Anyhows, thanks Brendan for a great day who by the way got his 1st coin in one of the first holes he dug.....Well done. Till next time, keep coil to the soil mates. ;)
-
And herewith the button pics
-
Now that's good news James!
So much land still waiting for you guys to unlock it's treasures!!!
Always looking forward to see what you guys dig up at the "Lady Selborne Area"
Good luck friends! :)

Hi All
A bit late but here is my finds of Saturday, 13 September 2014 at our favourite Lady. My coins came out slow with Tom hunting the dust out of the place. At the end of the day with a mixture of blood, sweat, dust and a bit of Captain Morgan, Tom had me totally licked...... Well, there is always next weekend....Heheheh
Did manage to find:
A silver 10 Cent 1963
1/4d 1953
Farthing 1895
3d 1943
A brass tak with a number 8
Nice Total Badge
-
Here is the 1895 Farthing at a closer look. My first pre 1900 coin at Selborne.
-
It seems like the "Lady" has an endless supply of treasure! Those of us in the outskirts of the country can only drool over all the nice stuff you guys are digging up :P. Enjoy!
-
I must say, the Lady really spoils us over here Barney. I see you are from Hoedspruit. Have you dug around in the History of Hoedspruit and surrounding areas as yet? I am sure if memory serves correct that there were Boer War activities in the area. These sites might yield interesting finds. I found my 1st and ever Gold coin a year ago on a boer war site....... ;D
-
Very nice finds JK we will see what the Lady offers this Saturday
-
Hey James...I love the Total badge and the coin has to be a once in a life time....Awesome mate...awesome!
-
Hi James, very nice finds. i like your Total badge and 1895 Farthing coin. i am still hoping to get one of those pre 1900 coins. I baught a mine lab pro pointer like yours so iam not nicking coins any more.

-
Well, with braai day and all and all, we decided to just that today at Lady Selborne.....Joining in with me was Tom and RockShandy....Boy oh boy did we have a blast. This was truely a day of records and record breaking not likely to be seen on this scale again. When I arrived there I found RockShandy with his 1st 3 coins in hand. Wow, now that is a way to start off. The next moment, coins popped out all over the show....Tickys, 6 Pences... I got my 1st ever Duiwels 1/2 Penny of 1899. Another pre-1900 coin in Selborne. Tom even got his first ever 2 1/2 shilling today.....Never though I would see him dance the jig......Lol
Well, with the day done and dusted we unearthed and whopping 35 coins between the 3 of us.
Tom exceeded and pushed his record coin finds in a single hunt at Selborne to 12 coins. I myself increased my count to a new record of 15 pre-1965 coins and 1 x newer 1 cent (1970's)...This truely was an awesome day.
Here's my pics and finds info....

-
Hey Epic day for you Boyz!!! I can't believe you guys got all those coins....Man that's awesome well done!
-
Great finds!! Braai day seems to have brought out the best in the lady
-
Lol it definately did. It was a great day. Once again...This was a re-hunt in an area where I initially started. After this, we had a group hunt in a portion of this area taking out 42 coins. We also hada small rehunt a while ago in a small section of this area taking out 8 coins. Last Sunday I took out 6. Thats more than 50 coins in 3 sweeps. Eish :o
-
Yes JK the Lady smiled again, it was a good re-hunt. These are my finds for the last 2 hunts
-
This was the best find for the day 1955 2 1/2 Shilling
-
Well done guys, very nice coins indeed.
-

-

-
Two rings in one day!!!.....thats just freaking awesome!!
-
@ Tom....please post a fresh pic of the coin you have as your avatar, my son found a coin that looks the same...I showed it too a coin collector who was very interested in the coin but could not give me any details..
Hi Tony
The coin is a Southern Rhodesian 1 Penny on Tom's Avatar. It was posted on this forum a while back http://treasurehunters.co.za/forums/show-your-finds/former-%27lady-selborne-area%27-suiderberg-finds/330/ (http://treasurehunters.co.za/forums/show-your-finds/former-%27lady-selborne-area%27-suiderberg-finds/330/) Lol, I was there when he found it.
-
I have to agree with Tom and James, it was a GREAT day!
I arrived at the Lady, turned off the car lights, and walked in a straight line from my car, swinging my Garrett to where we always park.
Five minutes later, I found my first 3d. - Silver in the Poc! :)
Next I found 2 x bullet heads and then a 1d.
About half hour later, as James arrived, I was digging a hole and was about 7cm deep - and there it was, my first "Duiwels-Pennie" (British pre-decimal One Penny)
A short while later I pulled out another 3d and a 6d. These both came out of the same hole.
(You can see the 6d is stained from being in the hole next to the 3d.
I also found a lid from a Saridone 50 Tablets tin box – first made by Roche in 1933 – this one “Made under licence in the Union of South Africa”.
2 x 9mm bullet heads (I found 3 but one dropped behind the washing machine while cleaning)
1 small steel pumpkin, with 2 little clips on the back.
Nice complete spoon – my first full cutlery piece from the Lady. (It has the words SILVA WYTE STAINLESS NICKEL on the back of the stem of the spoon.)
I started at 06:00 and found my last coin at about 10:00. I had to leave at 12:00, and by then I was 1 coin short of my record of 9 coins from the Lady (but that took 10 hours! I am sure I would have smashed my previous record if I stayed till sunset.)
My total coins found were as follows:
1/4d 1947
1/2d 1949 – good patina
1d 1954
1d 1930 Britannia seated holding a Trident
1d 1950
3d 1943
3d 1942
6d 1935
I only get to go to the Lady about once every month or two, and I am always amazed at how she spoils us :)
Hup Heritage day!
Hup the Lady!
Hup the Professor! - That's you James :)
(You also got to love all the people who come to see what we are doing. They are typically landowners in the area, who are worried that we are Land Surveyors (or from the council), and they are all VERY afraid that Low cost housing gets put up where we are detecting.)
So are we guys! - we need to sweep the area clean before they come spoil our fun! LOL
-
Well done, it seems that this area has a lot more to give.
-
I used some Hydrogen Peroxide to try clean the 6d, as it was very badly stained.
Here is a before and after image.
-
That is indeed a great result.
How long did it take you to get it to it's former glory?
-
Nice going RockShandy
Looks nice. Now you have given me ideas again. Lol
-
Well boys and girls, after Heritage day's hunt behind us with new record set I could not imagine things going better...Well, at least not till yesterday (Saturday). With my mid set on hunting the dust out of the Lady, we set of once again re-hunting a spot we have been before and as usual she did not dissappoint. My very 1st dig delivered a tickey. From there things just went crazy.....
Before long a really amazing and never seen by me before coin came out. It was a 1927 Palestine 2 Mills......Awesome. Just awesome......

-
With yesterday's shocker of a hunt behind me, I lazily mozied into Selborne at about 10 this morning. Slowly started hunting, just taking in the silence and even taking a few shots with the air rife. Yesterday had me so chuffed...No way it could go better right???? Wrong, I was in for a shock once again......This time I managed 16 coins stopping 2 away from the current Selborne record.....What did slap me totally sideways is yet another never seen by myself coin. This time a East Africa 10 Cents of 1936. Believe it or not but the coin was Edward VIII (Edward 8)....I was astound.....I know of Edward VII but not really of Edward VIII.... Then it struck me...Edward VIII was king for almost a year from Jan 1936 I think to 10 December 1936 when he abdicated his throne to George VI.....Totally amazing.
Also found yet another Royal Airforce Button. Here are today's finds:
31-5-1961 Military medal
3d 1932
2 Shilling 1956
1 Shilling 1955
1d 1936
1d 1921 - Duiwels Penny

1/2d 1942
1/2d 1942
1cent 1961
1/2d 1949
1/2cent 1964
1/4d 1943
1/4d 1950
1/4d too encrusted to see a date
1/4 1958

James,
You might find this of interest.
Edward VIII came to the throne on 20th January 1936 on the death of his father, George V, from a chill. He abdicated on 11th December 1936 in order to marry the woman he loved, Wallis Simpson.
He would have been crowned in May 1937, and a series of coins was prepared for issue at that time dated 1937. In fact, over 200 dies for coins and medals had to be scrapped when he abdicated.
A very small number of proof sets were produced, containing coins from the gold five pound down to the farthing. One set has come on the market in recent years.
The reverse designs were as for his brother, George VI, in most cases, but with the following differences:
1.Crown: as for the George VI 1937 crown.
2.Half Crown: The royal arms on the reverse was in the form of a standard or flag rather than the shield used by George VI.
3.Florin: as for George VI.
4.Shilling: one design only, as for the George VI Scottish shilling
5.Sixpence: six intertwined signet rings
6.Threepence: three intertwined signet rings (see below for brass version)
7.Penny, halfpenny and farthing: as for George VI
Edward VIII broke with the tradition of suceeding monarch's heads facing in opposite directions as he preferred his left profile.
At this time serious thought was being given to phasing out the silver threepence piece as it was rather small. A variety of designs were considered, but eventually a twelve-sided brass coin was decided on, with a thrift plant on the reverse.
Patterns also exist with a different style of thrift plant on the reverse, and with a different flan thickness.
A variety of 'pattern' crowns with his effigy are known, but these are unofficial items produced for the collectors' market.

Thanks for the info Wilhelm. A very interesting read.

Yesterday was again our monthly "Boerewors Roll" get together at Selborne Saturday. The hunt started off slow with coins few and far inbetween. Eish, the re-hunts are getting more and more intense as the Lady really makes you sweat befor getting to her riches. It was a slow day overall. I only managed to recover 7 coins in total. Here they are:

1d 1952
1/4d 1947

Went hunting at my favourite Lady again today between 10:oo to 15:00. Geeeeeezzz was it a slow, day...... Abount 3/4 of the way through the hunt I only had a 10cent 1965 and a 1cent 1987. I was sure I am going to blank and that is something that would be unacceptable to me...... The next moment the tables was turned and some coins came popping out..... Now that is more like it I said to myself... This is how I know my Lady.... At the end of the hunt I managed 11 coins pre 1965 and 2 post 1965...Eish, today she really made me work :P
Today's finds:
1d 1943 (Man was I seriously @$#@# with myself when I buggered it up with the spade) Eish :o :( >:(
1d 1943 undamaged....... ;D
1d 1936
1/4 1943
1/4d 1943
1/4d 1954
1cent 1962
3d 1945
3d 1944
1 Shilling 1952
1 Shilling (George V) placing it between 1923 to 1936....Totally worn off on the rear side.
Eish, hope next weekend will be good.... Till next time, enjoy your hunts boys and girls and as always........Keep coil to the soil....>Dig you must...Find you will
-
Here is the Shilling closeup

More proof they had a coin flinging contest there over weekends. congrats on the nice finds.
-
I love the coins James....excellent going in the face of failure....never seems to amaze me how worn down some of the older coins are, you just don't see that in modern coins.
-
Why do they call that coin "the Duiwels penny?

Why do they call that coin "the Duiwels penny?
Hi Tony
The old boer folks used to believe that the devel carried a 3 pinted fork...... Hence with Britania at the back of these pennies holding a Trident, some outright called it the "devels penny / duiwels pennie.....Lol, gotta love them old folks :) ;) :)

This is what Wikipedia have to say:
The penny that was brought to the Cape Colony (in what is now South Africa) was a large coin — 36 mm in diameter, 3.3 mm thick and 1 oz (28 g) — and the twopence was correspondingly larger at 41 mm in diameter, 5 mm thick and 2 oz (57 g). On them was Britannia with a trident in her hand. The English called this coin the Cartwheel penny due to its large size and raised rim,[11] but the Capetonians (what citizens of Cape Town, South Africa call themselves) referred to it as the Devil's Penny as they assumed that only the Devil used a trident.[12] The coins were very unpopular due to their large weight and size.[13]

Lüderitzbucht Pass (Namibian, South West African slave tag).
Slaves would have to wear these tags according to the towns they worked in, if they were bought by someone from another town they would take this tag
and make a new one.
This tag belonged to a slave who lived in Lüderitz.
Sometimes you find these slave tags with a hole punched at the bottom as well as the top.
A tag like that meant that the slave was bought by someone from another town and had to hand his or her tag to the municipality of that town, the municipality would
make a hole at the bottom and sew it into a book to confirm that slave is leaving that town.
A new tag would be made for him or her in another town.
The slave who had this tag must have always remained in the town of Lüderitz.
The tag measures 5cms.
these were not just slave tags but ID tags that had to be carried by black people and coloured (Cape Malay) people too. Similar to an apartheid ID card

To Dig or Not to Dig.......That still remains the question mate. Seriously, the Lady phoned me stating that you must come in and renew your Selborne membership. Hahahahahahah :P
-
My son had his first home school exam today with me taking leave to be home also. After the exam we all hopped over to Lady Selborne to unwind and relax. The sun was scorching hot but believe you me...... After a few hours of severe heat, I am glad we did go. I hit a 1/2 Penny and another prize find that have not to my knowledge been unearthed at Selborne in more than a year of hunting there. It was a 1938 Groot Trek Eeufees Medal to commemorate the 100 years since the Great Trek.
In the one side it had a map of South Africa with inscriptions "Die Groot Trek" and a date 1838. On the map is a trail of the Trek with 4 key areas identified from bottom to top being:
1. Slagters Nek
2. P M Burg (Pietermaritzburg)
3. Vegkop
4. Bloed R (Blood River)
The opposite side of the medal depicts a man next to an Ox wagon with mountains in the back gorund. It is inscribed Voortrekker Eeufees and 1938
Boys and girls....This has me excited. Although not worth much in monetary value, but to me this is one Awesome Find..... Can't wait to get into the field again.....
Till later then......Keep coil to the soil mates.......
-
Wow, just realised as well that I have hit the 1 000 post mark. That seemed so far away when I started here in this family yet there it is....Well, guess we will have to go for 1 500 next. Here is the medal close-ups.....Enjoy

Hi James, Very nice well done. Ill see you on Saturday again.
Cheers and happy huntings
-
Well boys and girls, after the medal on Thursday it was early at Selborne with heaps of anticipation. The hunt started off very slow in a area we recovered 54 coins in total quite some time ago in a previous group hunt. This time I was joined by Tom, Cindy and Brendan. As the morning dragged on, the sun came down on us boiling my brains in my skull to human soup.
All of a sudden it was coins, coins and more coins everywhere....... I could not believe the rate at which they popped out, and this in a area we have worked over before. Strangest thing though was the amount of Tickeys (3d) that came out and the unusual signals it was giving on my Xterra 305. Normally I find them on a constant 32 or 32/36 mix. This time it varied as low as 16/20 which is way down in the pull tab range with some of them giving a tripple reading of 24/28/32. This was quite odd but did explain why we miss those little suckers. They are masters of disguise.
Up to Saturday morning by record for pre-1965 coins in one hunt stood at 18 with the group total for the day at 54. After an extrodenary 10 hour hunt day my count came in at 20 coins and the total number for the hunt at 56. Bam, what more could be asked for....
Here are my finds for Saturday with the pics:

-
This morning I went back to the same spot where we hit the motherload yesterday in search of Tom's Tickey that he lost and decided to once again re-work the area not expecting to find to much more than one or two left behinds. Boy was I in for yet another supprise. I was joined today by Eric and spend a total of 8 hours in the area.
At the end of the day I recovered 17 coins, a small pocket knife (which I forgot to take a pic of), and a pendant of the Gongregation of the Childrent of Mary dating back to the late 1800's. Waht an awesome discovery....

Congregation of the Children of Mary Medal
This beautiful 19th century medal would have been worn by a member of the group "The Congregation of the Children of Mary".
The front of the medal shows the Blessed Virgin Mary in the same pose that she has on the Miraculous Medal: standing on a snake with a halo of stars around her head. (I've added a picture of a Miraculous Medal right below the Children of Mary medal) The Miraculous Medal was struck at the request of the Virgin Mary during a series of visions that were experienced by St Catherine Laboure beginning in 1830. In 1835 St Catherine told her confessor of a request the Blessed Mother had made to her during on of these visions:
"It is the Blessed Virgin's wish that you should found a Confraternity of the Children of MARY. She will give them many graces. The month of May will be kept with great splendour and MARY will bestow abundant blessings upon them."
And so the seed was planted for the beginning of The Congregation of the Children of Mary. The group was first opened to girls who were students or orphans in the care of the The Sisters of Charity (St Catherine Laboure's religious order), and later welcomed girls not associated with the order as well. Girls and young women in the society were encouraged to live holy and devout lives in the everyday world by embracing the virtues of sacrifice, prayer, and works of charity.
But....you couldn't just show up and say "Hey! I'm ready to be a child of Mary!" A girl had to
request to join, then wait six months during which time she practiced the virtues of the group and prepared to live its values. When a girl finally entered the group, she was given a beautiful medal, like the one above, which she could wear on a blue ribbon. I've even heard that they sometimes wore little blue capes as well!
The wording around the edge of the medal reads "Monstra Te Esse Matrem" which is Latin for "Show thyself a mother". These words come from a line in the ancient Marian hymn "Ave Stella Maris" or "Hail Star of The Sea".
When you flip the medal over, you see an emblem featuring two stems of lilies curving around a radiant star. I think that the star must also represent Mary as "The Star of the Sea", and the lily symbolizes purity, which was an important virtue for Children of Mary.
The wording around the edge is in French and translates as "Congregation of the Children of Mary", but the group was also known as the "Sodality of the Children of Mary". At the bottom is a small area that could be used to engrave the child's name or the date of her entry into the society.
-
WOW James. Well done!!! I would love to see all your finds from that area in 1 pic..if it all fits in..lol. I'm sure you could open a shop by now.
Lol Peter......It will have to be an wide angle shot. To date I have recovered 333 pre 1965 coins (Excluding some that I forgot to post and catalogue, still lying around the house) and about 15 medals from Selborne. If everything goes well I should hopefully reach the 400 mark by the end of the year. ;) :P ;)
-
Going by todays finds, you will reach that mark by the end of the month..lol
-
Where is that f*#cking 5 shilling!!!.....excellent finds to all of you!!
Lol Tony, The elusive 5 Shilling will come. At this stage I am still not digging High end 44 signals which might be it. First wanna get the rest of the goodies out, then concentrate on the next run over on the 44's ;)

Me too....Hang on. Still have more to come. The finds of yesterday and today mate.

Had an interesting hunt yesterday at Selborne joined in by Eric and Brendan. Must say it is starting to get more difficult to get the little suckers with find lying deeper and signals getting choppy at best.
Brendan had a blast and got quite a couple of coins. I ended up with the wierd and interesting stuff. One of the coins I found late afternoon in a spill of 3 coins was thought to be a very worn off 1/2 cent or 1/2 penny. It is only now that I realise after cleaning exactly what I have.........
Here are my finds. Look at for the mystery coin at the bottom....... ;)
A metal type of bottle or container or something that looks like a chess pawn. No clue what this is..... Any insight???
ISCOR tag No 3815

After Jnr. wrote his English exams today, I was left stuck indoors with rain coming down and dampening my hunting spirits. The moment the drops turned into a light drizzle, I rigged my machine to a more water protected version and out I went. Only managed about an hour and a half before heavier rains chased me off. Did manage 1 coin and some other stuff.
Here are my finds:
1/4d 1945
A large military tunic button
A smoothe flat button
An American flat button.....Interesting for this area.
A clip on ear ring
A small metal Rooster.
A nice little brass broach with Green and Red stones.....
Well, till later. Ceep coil to the soil mates.. ;)

Hey James some very cool items you guys got there the Iscor tag looks like the ones I find out this side !
Very interesting Tony
Have you managed to find out what the tags was used for by any chance?
-
Man, I had a ball on Saturday! It was so great with everyone there, and I had a friend of mine who is interested in getting into the hobby, come around to see what its about.
My best find for the day is a round oblong object with a Chinese Lady on the right with flowers on the left, and on the other side, there is a Chines Gent on the right, and flowers down the left - No idea what the object is! (I actually nearly threw it away).
Also a Cute Cadillac type toy car, a Singleton Snuff lid (good condition).
50 Escudos Mocambique Portuguesa Republica, a
1955 1/4d and a
1961 1/2c.
2 x CycleRywiel Bicycle Licences (1940 and 1937) #18490 & #9453.
Another Pipe Ring (I found one previously with an "M" etched on it), a Flat Button with "Made in Czecho Slovakia", a Small red toy car in 2 parts, a gold costume jewellery earring with "Hong Kong" on the back and an Oros man lid.
A whole conglomeration of funnies, but a good 11 hours on site makes for a happy RockShandy :)
...So much so that I will be there for a bit this coming Sunday again - Whoo-Hoo!
-
Just for interest - I have highlighted the Chinese Lady Object, which was in amongst everything I found (Yes I take everything I find home and inspect it and record all the junk - and boy am I glad I do that :)
-
Hi RockShandy
Glad you enjoyed it mate although the finds was unusually scarse. Glad also to have met Ian and to hear his take on certain aspects and finds. It was a real pleasure meeting him. See ya over the weekend mate. Remember, Chinese also lived in Selborne in earlier years although not many.... ;)
-
Hey James some very cool items you guys got there the Iscor tag looks like the ones I find out this side !
Very interesting Tony
Have you managed to find out what the tags was used for by any chance?
I believe that they were safety tags or dog tags, a leather strap through the two slots on each side would attach them around your wrist so you could be identified if you were in a severe accident and could not be recognized...
-
Great finds Rockshandy. I have found a few of those snuff tins in the past, but not one in such great condition.I have also found a few pipe rings, and my heart always skips because they look like rings

Hi all
Sunday was a blast hunting with everybody, and the soft ground easy to dig. Found some cool stuff, 1 penny, 1/2 penny, 1/4penny 1966 1c. I have inserted a photo of my favourite finds which include 2 bicycle licenses 1950 - 51 and 1940 - 41 and a military badge. Also found an old Ford hub-cap and a table spoon.
Just a word of warning to all, I applied a lot of sun-block before the hunt, I did not, however, realise that my boep is a little large and my t-shirt a little small so the sun burnt my butt-cleavage to a crisp!! I struggle to sit, stand and lie on my back at the moment. Moral of the story for me - wear appropriate clothing when detecting! Please be careful out there. I was going to insert a photo of my designer tan but I don't want to scare any of the forum members away!
Happy detecting and thanks James, Charmaine, Tom, Rockshandy, Shaun Silver and Brendan for a lekker hunt.
-
Nice finds guys. Eric - thanks for the sunblock story - I had a good chuckle! ;D
-
Awesome finds!! By the way Eric, are you a plumber by any chance..hehe.

Hunted on Saturday 13 December 2014 together with Tom, Cindy, Brendan and Shaun at Lady Selborne. Petertait also joined us for a brief period. 2 Shilling - Severely worn and damaged. No date even remotely visable :o
-
Today Shaun and I decided to do things a bit differently and took on some mountain / hill hunting..... Believe me when I say that hunting against a angle is a horse of another colour compared to level surface hunting. To top it all off, we faced some light rain coming and goining till about 14:00 before a larger shower chaced us out of the playing field. Here are some pics of the surroundings and finds
-
Just love the scenery

Here we go guys and girls. The race is on and time is running out on Selborne. We will have to do some intensive hunting before we loose what is left. :-\ :o :-\ This article came out yesterday. For those who have been there recently, this is the new development that we saw coming up next to the Highway. I believe the section they scraped opposite that will be next so we will focus on that area this Saturday and Sunday full day.
Lady Selbourne, the scene of forced removals by the apartheid government, has risen from the ashes just weeks before turning 110 years. Piet Lechelele was the first beneficiary to receive keys to his new RDP house from Gauteng Premier David Makhura to mark the return of racially integrated property ownership to the area since 1958.
The remainder of the 299 units will be allocated before Christmas, Makhura said. Lechelele, dressed in a black and white Orlando Pirates shirt, was ecstatic as he walked up the steps to his upper floor unit. Behind him were Makhura, MEC for Human Settlements and Co-operative Governance Jacob Mamabolo, and Tshwane human settlements MMC Joshua Ngonyama. “This is my first time ever to own a house,” said Lechelele, adding he would be moving in with his family of three within a week. Pirates supporters behind him jokingly encouraged him to decorate the house in the colours of the Absa Premiership club.
Lady Selbourne, located in Suiderberg about 10km north-west of the city, was established in 1905 as an area where black people could own land. Towards the end of the 1940s, property prices were inflated, resulting in landowners renting out their homes and building rooms for leasing. This led to overcrowding, and in 1949, when Lady Selbourne was incorporated into the City of Pretoria, it had 1 952 registered properties.
The apartheid government used the situation to portray Lady Selbourne as an overpopulated township and a health hazard. Government argued the area was undesirable and too close to the white areas. In June 1958, proclamations were passed which declared areas that would be subject to forced removals, among them Lady Selbourne. Many residents claimed their homes were bulldozed at the last minute without giving them enough time to pack their belongings.
But the past was forgotten when Makhura told beneficiaries all races would live together in peace at the new houses without fear of eviction. Makhura said this time around, no one would take the new houses away. “Lady Selbourne has risen from the ashes of the one that was destroyed,” he said. “What we see in this development is the integration of people from all races, something that was taken from them by the then government. These people will once again spend their Christmas as a fully integrated community.”
He said the principle of one house up, one shack down should apply and urged residents to never sell their houses nor rent them out and return to their old shacks. “If you do that, we will hound you out of this province. If the shacks remain standing, we will never see progress with regards to their eradication,” Makhura said. He promised to weed out corruption in the housing system and ensure houses were allocated to their rightful beneficiaries.
In all mega settlements, such as Lady Selbourne, Makhura said beneficiaries would be those in desperate need, and preference would be given to local residents. Mamabolo said he was privileged to be part of the administration that restored the dignity and rights of the people in Lady Selbourne through housing. He said: “Never again will you be evicted from here; no government will come here and throw you out. “These houses and all future infrastructure developments in this area will benefit all citizens, irrespective of their race and colour.”
On completion of all phases, the Lady Selbourne mixed-housing development project will consist of 5 700 units.
Beneficiaries will choose from RDP, low income, conventional bonded, finance-linked subsidy and rental stock.

Agree Barney. She never disappoints but finds are becoming more scarse. I still have a few coins to post from December and the past weekend. Must just get around to cleaning them.....Lol
-
After cleaning pig
Just goes to show. You can just never get a pig clean....Lol :o
-
Love to know how many holes you guys have made at Lady Selborne!! Nice Brendan
Lol Tony, that would be interesting to account for. I estamate about 1 000 coins collectively (myself haveing just below 400) have come out of Selborne excluding any other items of note. If you look at a hit ratio average of 1:10 or 1:20 it should be in the region of about 10 000 to 20 000 holes :o.....Lol :D ;)
-
Hi Guys
You made 50 pages of finds @ the Lady.

Hi Tom, yes i found the pendant last Sunday next to a old building foundation in the big field where we hunted last Saturday. I also found 3x 1d pennies that still need to be cleaned.
Cheers and happy hunting

That cross is great Brendan
-
Hi Paul, Thanks. :)
-
Great finds boyz!!!....I am itching to get out and do some hunting but I came back to madness at work and am playing catch up big time!....Just amazed at how many Shillings you guys are getting!
-
Like the cross Brendan you must try "Koeksoda " on your silver it works well when cleaning.
-
I joined Tom & crew on my very first hunt, kitted with my brand new Garrett AT Gold on Saturday.
I was welcomed with open arms & must thank Tom, Tom's daughter, Eric etc. for their hospitality, especially Tom's daughter for borrowing me her pointer ( I owe you!)
I unboxed & assembled the AT Gold late Friday night (but didn't bother checking if it actually worked) very exited for the next day's hunt.
When I powered the unit on site I couldn't get it to make any sounds with or without the headphones (please let me know if you have an idea what could be wrong), although I could see on the screen that it did respond to metallic objects.
I then decided to hunt with just monitoring the on screen display & dig up everything that looked to me like a good hit.
I (relatively) quickly (many hours) learned (after allot of holes and blistered hands) that digging up whatever are picked up is not the way to go (although it is good for learning your machine) & started to focused on the higher conductivity targets.
Below are some of my finds worth mentioning:
1945 1/4 Penny
1956 Tickey
A bullet casing (looks like a .22 calibre with 88 & 13 on the back of it)
An old lock
Two buckles
To any newbie I would like to recommend the below (now) obvious kit for their first hunt:
SUNBLOCK ( I am "medium to well" after Saturday)!!!
Gloves (your hands will be blistered without them)
Pointer (a serious mission without one)
Lots of water (digging is a serious workout especially if you going to dig every hit)
Thanks for the great experience Tom, I will definitely be joining you again!
-
Well done Regy!! Nice coins for your first outing.
-
Nice going Regy!!...great start even with a faulty machine!!...the AT Pro is very similar to the AT gold and the sound should be automatic....there is no way to turn it off on the settings.....you can only turn it down on the head phones
-
Well done Regy!! I would speak to the distributer you got the machine from. The sound issue shouldnt be doing that
-
Good going considering your handicap... ;D
-
You are welcome Regy it was nice having you at Selborne. Well-done on the finds even with out sound.
Tom
-
Nice coins for the first time out! 8)

Lol, it looks like you guys have been having some serious fun without me.......I'll be back soon.....
Reggy:
Welcome and glad you enjoyed it although you had some hick-ups with your AT. Sunblock and Rum & Coke (Uh....Sorry water) is a requirement when hunting Selborne else you will definately dry out mate.
Brendan
The tag you have is not a tag but possibly another token. If so, it will only be the 2nd one found at Selborne in a year and a half. The image in front is the emblem of the Pretoria Municipality.
Anyway, great finds everyone. Hope you left some for me too.
-
Hi James. Thanks for the info, this will be my first token ever then. See you as soon as your metal detector is ready :)
-
Hi Brendan nice find you are busy while we are not there ;D

-
Well done Brendan
-
Hi all, Erick and myself decided to conduct a bit of a hunt at Lady Selborn today. The grass is long and it was a challange to find something. I did however manage to find a 1951 1/2d penny, a copper handle of something with nice paterns and a unidentified copper object that hinges open with a round glass in it.
Cheers and Happy Huntings :)
-
Hi all. i do not have a display cabinet yet so i decided to make myself a small display box for my Lady selborn finds. Not all my finds are in the box just the nice small fragile things.
Cheers and Happy huntings :)
-
I think the goodie that has the hinge and the round glass is a fold out magnifying glass.Does it have three sides to it?
-
The cabinet is very cool Brendan...whats the big shinny round coin on the top left shelf?
-
Hi Tony. Its only got 2 sides, the other side has a round hole the same size as the side with the glass. :)
-
Hi Tony, the round shinny coin is a old mercedes badge marked Daimler benz 1886. I baught it from one of the people sleeping in the bush at lady selborn late last year. i did not find it myself so i did not post it under finding. i will however take a picture of it and post it for you to see.
-
Hi Tony. Attatched are the pix of the mercedes badge.

Hi Tom. Nice finds :)

-
This condom cases are everywhere. Lol
-
I would think that Mercedes badge would be considered as a Token and may be very collectable nice...You had me going with the that badge I thought you might have found a Five Shilling there!
-
Hi Brendan
Really impressive display. I bought the same yellow Hotwheel airport firetruck (4th from the left on the side of your display case) when I was still in primary school. I still have it.
Keep it up
-
Too cool Brendan... 8) I think I'm going to move... ;D

Hi all. I had a bit of a dry run at Lady Selborn today only finding a 1952 penny. The grass is still to long for a proper hunt. Hi Tony, Thanks. :) I try not to strike the finds with the spade, in the begining i used to scratch and strike allot of my finds thats until i got my mine lab profinder. I still sometimes make mistakes and can kick myself, strike long finds like spoons and forks especially if the grounds hard. Last weekend was a terrible weekend for me when i hunted a spot at Lady Selborne in hard ground and put my spade right through a bicycle lisence cutting it in half. :(
Cheers and Happy Huntings

Last but not least is this pass. I thought it was the sam as the one Tom found but its not. Toms pass has Luderitzbucht written on and mine has Omaruru written on. While researching i found the same tag as mine was for sale on ebay for R4500. :o (Dont know if it was sold for that amount) The information i found on this pass is as follow:
'Omaruru Pass' identification token : S E A Greentree, Cape Garrison Artillery, South African Army, date 1900
Description
Oval shaped brass token featuring an imperial German crown and the words 'Omaruru Pass' embossed into the obverse. There are nine very small raised dots arranged horizontally across the lower front of the token for the imprinting of an individual identification number. The edges of the token are lightly raised. A single hole has been punched into the top of the token for wearing around the neck. The reverse has no markings.
Tokens such as this were used by the Imperial German colonists as a method of controlling local indigenous people by the Imperial German colonists in the area. They were usually marked with a unique number on the lower half of the obverse.
Cheers and Happy Hunting :)

Well done. I see you have been a busy bee in my absence from Selborne. Lol, hope you left some for me and the boys
-
Hi Guys
Long time no see. Have been a bit scarce latley but have been checking into the forum on a regular basis. Turned 40 last month and got a sniper coil for my ACE 250 and a lesche digger for my birthday. I am very impressed with my sniper coil, I find it only goes down 2 - 3 inches but is great for trashy areas. Also very light on the arm - feels like you are swinging fresh air most of the time. Forgive me but I am a bit lazy and dont like to dig deep so this is ideal for me! The lesche digger is also fantastic and I am very impressed with the serated edge.
These are my Lady Selbourne finds from Saturday: 2 X 1 pennies 1942 & 43, a Rhodesian 1 penny 1936 (my oldest coin to date) an old lock, a rusty file and that strange looking object, which I managed to google and find that it is a Brittish button stick - patented in 1917 it was used by soldiers to polish brass buttons and belt buckles on uniforms without dirtying the material. Very chuffed with this find.
Thanks Brendan and James for an awesome hunt. Hopefully see you next weekend.
Eric
-
Hi Eric
Thanks for being there. Will definately be hunting again this weekend. Still have to scope out the area. Must say, i managed a good 18 coins for the weekend, 2 Bicycle Tgs and a nice Air Force Badge. Will post as soon as it is cleaned up.

Hi Eric. Nice finds. That sniper coil of yours really impressed me. Hopefully next weekend will bring some more nice finds.
Cheers and Happy Hunting :)

Okay guys and girls...... So it has really been a while since I last posted any sort of finds here on the forum. As you know, hunting has been limited in the fast few months with my machine also acting up at some stage. So tonight for your entertainment I decided to do some finds cleaning and get my postings up to par again. Please bear with me as I go along.
The following was of finds made between January to March 2015 at Lady Selborne. Here are the front and back pics of these finds:

1 Cent 1962
1 Cent 1961
1 Cent 1962
These 3 all came from one hole in an area we thought we have hunted intensely. The only reason I can think of that we missed them before is that it did not give a solid signal while sweeping unless you sweep very slow whilst Isolating the signal.
1D Edward 7 Duiwel's Penny - Too encrusted to see the date. Can only make out 19????
1/2D 1942
50 Centavos from Mocambique - 1936
-
Hope I have your attention for now. Stay tuned. 5 More days of hunting to come shortly
-
The hunt was a bit slower on Sunday 26 April 2015 but did yield some interesting goodies as usual:
12-05-1937 Coronation Medal. Severely hammered but still nice to find
SAAF SALM (Airforce Badge) - Stay tuned for more info on this item
1957 Rhodesia and Nyasaland Queen Elizabet The Second One Penny - Damaged but unique. Belive the 1st one at Selborne

Alain:
You would love this for sure........I believe I have read an article the other day (Can't seem to find it now though :( :o :( ) that the Belgian Air Force had a similar badge that the used to wear during the war. I believe that you would be able to confirm this....??
Issued to the South African Air Force during WW2. Awesome......Note that the badge has SAAF - SALM on the bottom of the scroll. The "S.A.L.M" stands for: "SUID AFRIKAANSE LUG MAG", which, translated into English becomes:- "SOUTH AFRICAN AIR FORCE"

On Friday, 1 May we where back in action at the Lady again and decided to hunt a spot we have done numerous times before. Finds was slow and far in between. At the end of the day, some finds did come out though:
1D 1960 - Damaged by tractor grass cutters
1/2D 1942
1/4D 1955
-
After a slow start to the weekend we headed back to our favourite Lady on Saturday, 2 May 2015. This time she met me with open arms and just could not stop giving. This made for a really awesome hunt:
South Africa Youth Training Brigade ~ South African Army Military Cap Badge - A "Patria Badge" with a hand holding a flame torch
A Transvaal Scottish Badge
1D 1908 Duiwels Penny
1D Either 1918 or 1919 Duiwels Penny - Date encrusted
1D 1942
1D 1940
1/2 Cent 1961
1/4D 1954
1/4D 1953
1/4D 1944
-
Closeups of the two badges with some history:
Transvaal Scottish:
The Transvaal Scottish Regiment is an infantry regiment of the South African Army. As a reserve unit, it has a status roughly equivalent to that of a British Army Reserve or United States Army National Guard unit. John Murray, Marquis of Tullibardine, who later became the 7th Duke of Atholl, established the regiment after the conclusion of the Second Anglo-Boer War in 1902. Its initial membership consisted of volunteers from Scottish units that had fought in the war who chose to demobilise and remain in the colony. The new unit wore his family tartan and took the form of an oversize battalion with companies in a number of major Transvaal towns.
The unit first saw service during the Bambatha Rebellion. “C” company of the Natal Rangers was recruited from men of the Transvaal Scottish Regiment (then called the Transvaal Scottish Volunteers).
Check The Wiki link for more details - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transvaal_Scottish_Regiment (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transvaal_Scottish_Regiment)
South Africa Youth Training Brigade ~ South African Army Military Cap Badge - 1941 to 1946 - I Believe this to be the School Cadettes
-
Last but not least the finds of 3 May 2015 to get almost up to date. I still have some other assortments of bits and pieces such as buttons and tags to clean up that I will post at a later stage. Here are the finds:
1D 1950
1D 1942
1D 1956
1/2D 1927 Duiwels Half Penny - Awesome
Alos a item believed to be a miss struck coin or token. I had Tony running around looking through his toke book looking for this one. Later I pooped over to Brian Hern and bough his token book but could not find it. Upon showing Mr. Hern the pic, he confirmed it to be a blank medal struck such a way during the Boer War and thereafter to be engraved as needed at a later stage. Strange but interesting.....
-
Closeups of the medal and the 1/2 Penny
-
Thanks for the updates James
-
Sheeeees!!!......James!!.....I think they added a supercharger to that 305 of yours....Brilliant find bud the blank token is very cool and seems to have been styled on the Reis coins!
-
I like your spoon there Brendan...Maybe we can work on a complete set and get together for some tea!
-
Lol Tony. They might have. Just changed my settings a bit as well as the way I hunt. Seems to be delivering quite well. Everything below 24 diacriminated out and also 44. I know I can miss on gold but with the high tin and foil content this seems to work. Just need to keep the sweeps tight and isolate every chirp
-
Those are some awesome finds there guys!!
-
Captain's Log: Stardate 9 May 2015. Location: Lady Selborne. Our mission: To boldly dig where no man has dug before. Good Golly, and with all that said and done I sadly report that we blanked out all three of us today. The 1st time in like forever[emoji16] [emoji23] [emoji16]
-
Aldo I live in the middle of the country, you blow me right out of the water with your finds!!!
For me here in Flanders,Belgium it's truly a pleasure to look at these great coins!
You guys really dig up the history of your country.!!!!
Congrats James!

Now this was a hard one to crack James! :)
I called a few people who are still in the Belgian Army.
You right, we had a very similar badge as in your pic.
Was still in use in the early 1950's .
-
1000's of KM. between South Africa and Belgium...
I love the similarities in our language!(I really do!)
"SUID AFRIKAANSE LUG MAG"
"ZUID AFRIKAANSE LUCHTMACHT' :)in one word this side of the world! :)
I think I could pick up Suid Afrikaans in 6 months or so because it's so familiar to me.
26 Years or so ago I was traveling in Greece with a guy from Windhoek , Namibie.
When I spoke Duch/Flemish, he hardly understood me, but when I spoke the Flemish dialect from were I live, it worked out ok!
Happy hunting!!!
-
Gee's James, that's brilliant!!! Well done!!!
-
Nice finds, think I should get out that side some day, as it is only around 40km from my house.
-
You can G4A. We have guys from Centurion and Benoni coming over from time to time. From where are you?
-
Hi all, i did a hunt over the weekend with James and Tom at Lady Selborn and did not have much luck with coins, only found 1x 1/4 penny. i did however find a nice Reward Key Tag dated 1931, a toy jeep and a lead toy soldier.

Hi Tony, the 305 mine lab is a great detector, I am still learning how to use the detector properly with the help of James and Tom. I have found some nice things right from the start with the mine lab and I know I will find a lot more. As for the ace 250 I know it so well its like a part of me when I switch it on and I've found some wonderfull goodies with it.
Cheers and Happy Hunting
-
Great to hear you doing all right with the 305 !
I'm sure "old hand James" & Tom will give you all there expertise!
you can't go wrong with a Minelab!!!
All the best mate!

-
On Sunday 17 May 2015, the day after Go Minelabbing I was hungry for more and joined up with Brendan at Lady Selborne. I must say it was a great day to hunt with the Minelab event still fresh in the mind. The finds for the day as folow:

The 5 Pfennig. Initially I thought it was 1994 so did not bother much. It was very dirty and only after some cleaning did I realise it was 1924
1919-1933
The Imperial German government disintegrated in a flurry of royal abdications as World War I ended. Desperate German parliamentarians, fearful of impending anarchy and civil war, hastily declared a German Republic. The new National Assembly, which
was convened Feb. 6, 1919 in Weimar had to establish a legal government, draft a constitution, and then conclude a peace
treaty with the Allies. Friedrich Ebert was elected as Reichs President.
The harsh terms of the peace treaty imposed on Germany were economically and psychologically unacceptable to the German
population regardless of political persuasion and the problem of German treaty compliance was to plague the Republic until
the worldwide Great Depression of 1929. The new constitution paid less attention to fundamental individual rights and concentrated
more power in the President and Central Government to insure a more stable social and economic order. The German
bureaucracy survived the transition intact and had a stifling effect on the democratic process. The army started training large numbers
of reservists in conjunction with the U.S.S.R. thereby circumventing treaty limitations on the size of the German military.
New anti-democratic ideologies were forming. Communism and Fascism were spreading. The National Socialist German
Workers Party, under Hitler's leadership, incorporated the everpresent anti-Semitism into a new virulent Nazi Catechism.
In spite of the historic German inflation, the French occupation of the Rhineland, and the loss of vast territories and
resources, the republic survived.
By 1929 the German economy had been restored to its pre-war level. Much of the economic gains
however were dependent on the extensive assistance provided by the U.S.A. and collapsed along with the world economy in
1929. Even during the good times, the Republic was never able to muster any loyal public support or patriotism. By 1930, Nationalists,
Nazis, and Communists held nearly half of the Reichstag seats and the government was forced to rely more and more on
presidential decrees as the only means to effectuate policy. In 1932, the Nazis won 230 Reichstag seats. As head of the largest
party, Hitler claimed the right to form the next government. President Hindenburg's opposition forced a second election in which
the Nazis lost 34 seats. Von Papen, however, convinced Hindenburg to name Hitler Chancellor by arguing that Hitler could be
controlled! Hitler formed his cabinet and immediately began consolidating his power and laying the groundwork for the Third
Reich.
MONETARY SYSTEM
(During 1923-1924)
100 Rentenpfennig = 1 Rentenmark
(Commencing 1924)
100 Reichspfennig = 1 Reichsmark

The Last Supper medal or something. Any ideas???

After a great hunt with Tony as his mining spots around Benoni, I was back in the saddle again with Brendan on 31 May 2015 hunting the thorn tree (Doring Bome) area as we all know it around here. This time around, the lady did not hold back and was not a moment shy to deliver. What a great hunt. I could not believe so many came out in an area well hunted in the past on several days with between 3 to 6 hunters per day. Between Brendan and myself we pulled out another 17 coins :o
Here are the finds:
1d 1950
1d 1941
1d 1941
1d 1951
1d 1953
1d 1938 - I just had to go and scratch this one >:( :o >:(
1/4d 1943
1/4d 1955
2 1/2 Shilling 1954 - Unbelievable that we all missed this one on so many occassions. This makes you go w.t.f?
Small United Pentecostal Church Pin Badge
A small button with a Crown and anchor
3d 1943
6d 1925 Zuid Afrika
Hopefully the Lady will continue her gift giving this coming weekend.

Brendan, it is not only the sheer amount of finds but also the quality that is so amazing. Well done! Can you post some pics of the markings inside the cigarette case? There are some websites where you can try and decipher (sure the markings are hallmarks) you can try http://www.925-1000.com/british_marks.html
-
Hi JacoS. This is the Hall Mark markings on the sigarett case. I had to crop the picture to post it.
Cheers and Happy Huntings :)
-
So if you are not out hunting yourself, second best thing is to live vicariously through someone else's hunt...Brendan, sure you know this already, but the lion means the silver is Sterling (.925), the anchor the fact that it is Birmingham made, the HM may be a maker's mark (Henry Matthews). If it is the maker's mark it would tie in with Birmingham, as the mark was used on Birmingham silver from 1895 onwards. The D would reference the date of hallmarking....no clue how THAt works though...
-
Wow thanks for the info JacoS. i will defnatly be looking for the other half of the silver case now during my hunts. :)
Cheers and happy hunting
-
Wow!!...Brendan you have knocked it out the park!!...nice bud
-
Hi all. i forgot to post a picture of a find a couple of weeks ago. Its a brooch i found at lady selborne during a hunt with Tom. The brooch was folded in half so i had to bend it open. The patina came of on one side so i will probably end up polishing up the whole brooch.
Cheers and Happy Hunting :)

Very cool Brendan...so that unidentified coin is the medalion?

Hi Tony, yes that encrusted coin i found and showed you and James turned out to be a 1942 copper medal. The image looks to be a horse with wings and a rider on. something is written on the botom but i cant make out what. i also tried to google it with no luck.

Hallo, a slow day at Lady Selborne on Saturday (for me in any case). We hunted close to the old store in the North West corner of the area finding mostly Singleton snuff tins and other bits and pieces.
My most interesting find was a “Two Scruple” Apothecaries Weight. These round Die-Struck Weights were used by Pharmaceutical Chemists (Pharmacists) exclusively until the late 1960’s to weigh out medicines. Most sets of Apothecaries Weights consisted of 6 weights: ½ Scruple; 1 Scruple; 2 Scruples; ½ Drachm; 1 Drachm; 2 Drachms
This particular weight was manufactured by W & T Avery Ltd of Birmingham, the most important manufacturer of weighing equipment in the British Empire from the 1818’s.
The weights originating from W & T Avery Ltd are difficult to date. Avery introduced coin shaped weights in 1847 (hence the registered date of 16 March 1847) and they were still listed in Avery’s Catalogue of 1894.
This specific one were manufactured in the period 1847 - 1911; from 1911 the weights were marked as ‘W & T Avery Ld’.
The Front:
A Crown surrounded by lettering “REGISTERED MARCH 16 1847″ & this surrounded by “APOTH. WEIGHT * W & T A”.
The Reverse:
Apothecary Symbol (the scruple symbol (℈), looks like a back to front Euro symbol) in Centre with Unit in Words above and below
Two Scruples = 2.59 grams
-
Well-done Andre
-
1x 1d 1941

Thanks for the reply Paul. Alot of bicycle licenses were found by the guys hunting at Selborne especialy in the ash pit areas. I personaly have only found one 4 wheeler license before which i gave to my dad for his old car collection. Hi all. I did a hunt again at Lady Selborne today and found a couple of things again. I hunted the outer edges of old spots that have been hit hard by the metal detectors in the past and dug every signal with the ACE 250. The sun was a real killer today. I also believe i found the first half shilling today at Lady Selborne ;D
The finds are as follow:
1930 half penny (my oldest so far)
1954 2 shilling
1961 bent half cent
1943 1/4 penny
1942 1d penny
1952 tiekie
1937 Half shilling ;D

Nice coin! The variety of finds at the lady is amazing...now if someone can explain how a 1928 Spanish coin ended up there?

wow, that half shilling sure is interesting. I wonder why it was cut (looks like in half) ... and where is the other half!

Hi all, Erick and myself decided to do a afternoon hunt at Lady Selborn today, My hunt started off bad after i damaged ny first find of the day a 1948 bicycle lisence. after that i managed to find one coin a 1949 1/4 penny, a 1960 flower design bicycle lisence, a spring bok, a old spoon and what appears to be a small flask thingy that is flattend.
