Hi Quentin. welcome to the forum.
I dont know the area but find out where people love to hang out weekends at dams\lakes, fishing spots, picnic sites
that would be your best bet to start with.

Google is your friend. Pietermaritzburg has some history.

Some tricks is to google something, go into image mode and select black and white pictures to see if you see something good.
